Israeli forces ended a 10-day Hebron lockdown while attacking a school in al-Mughayyir. The siege displaced hundreds of families and deprived about 80,000 students of education.

Hebron lockdown ends

Israeli forces ended their 10-day lockdown of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, but they continued to attack a school in al-Mughayyir. The Israeli occupation army continued its military operation in Hebron for the tenth day in a row, including the closure of some of its districts and the arrest of residents.

WAFA confirmed the expulsion of more Palestinian families from around Al-Quds Open University in Hebron, and the imposition of movement restrictions on citizens in areas near the closed Jalda and Deir Baha regions. The Israeli occupation army began a broad military operation in Hebron on October 23 after a shooting by two Palestinians killed two Israeli soldiers and injured three others, and the perpetrators were hailed as martyrs by gunfire from the occupation forces.

Displacement and education

The General Union of Palestinian Teachers said the siege deprived about 80,000 students of their right to education and forced 537 Palestinian families to displace from their homes. The union said the occupation disrupted 220 schools, ranging from public and private to those run by UNRWA, with students unable to return to classrooms during the past week due to repressive measures.

The General Union of Palestinian Teachers reported that the occupation army detained ten teachers from Al-Jenba Al- baseline mixed school located in the Masafir Yatta area in the southern West Bank. The occupation’s aggression also prevented about 80,000 students from enrolling in their schools, according to data from Hebron Municipality until Saturday evening.

Economic losses and arrests

Hebron Municipality estimated that the aggression displaced and harmed more than 3,300 residents, demolished 15 homes and facilities, and closed 327 shops in the city. The municipality estimated direct daily losses of about 12 million shekels, and it put total infrastructure losses at more than 6 million shekels.

The Relief and Aid Committee said the number of displaced individuals amounts to 3,361 people, including 232 infants, 1,193 children, 326 elderly, 147 pregnant or nursing women, and 32 people with disabilities. The occupation forces arrested more than 115 people since the start of the aggression, and the Hebron Chamber of Commerce estimated direct losses from closures at about 10 to 12 million shekels per day, including about 1 million shekels in the dairy sector alone.
