Hebron siege, arrests

Israeli forces kept Hebron under siege for the tenth consecutive day while they continued attacks on Gaza, according to Al Jazeera’s report from Jerusalem. Israeli occupation forces threatened to expand their military assault on the city of Hebron and to displace more families, as the Yaffa News Network account described. Israeli forces arrested the wife of martyr Hamouda Al-Jaabari and her father on Sunday, and the Yaffa News Network said Israeli forces arrested citizen Jamil Shweiki and his daughter, the wife of martyr Al-Jaabari, during a raid.

Residents reported additional families had been displaced from the vicinity of Al-Quds Open University in Hebron, and the Yaffa News Network said restrictions were imposed on Palestinian movement near Al-Jalda and Deir Bahha. The Yaffa News Network also said Israeli forces reinforced their deployment in areas they had declared closed and announced through official statements and loudspeakers that their military assault on the city would continue.

Displacement and closures

The Yaffa News Network said the ongoing assault on Hebron resulted in the displacement of residents and damage affecting more than 3,300 people, particularly in the Al-Jalda and Ain Deir Bahha areas. The Yaffa News Network reported that Israeli forces completely demolished 15 homes and facilities and closed 327 shops across the city, citing a statement issued by the Hebron Municipality on Saturday. The Yaffa News Network said daily direct economic losses resulting from the assault exceeded 12 million shekels, and it estimated total infrastructure losses at more than 6 million shekels.

The Zeteo account said Hebron’s lockdown was ordered after Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers, and it described occupation forces forcibly displacing thousands of Palestinians and demolishing homes after giving some families just minutes to collect their belongings. The Zeteo account also said Israeli police arrested U.S. journalist Jasper Nathaniel and activist Andrey Kharzhanovsky after illegal Israeli settlers attacked them.

What comes next

The Yaffa News Network said displaced families were increasingly concerned that Israeli forces may extend their presence in Palestinian neighbourhoods beyond the upcoming "Shabbat Chayei Sarah" event, scheduled for next Saturday. The Yaffa News Network reported that approximately 80,000 male and female students had been prevented from attending school as a result of the ongoing assault, now entering its tenth consecutive day. Al Jazeera’s Jerusalem daily segment said Israeli protesters in Tel Aviv and West Jerusalem were pushing to unseat Netanyahu while Israel’s siege on Hebron continued.

Zeteo framed the week in Palestine around a “full lockdown” of the occupied West Bank and ongoing bombings in Gaza, and it said Palestinians were paying the price for an election they can’t vote in. Zeteo said the result would be “more of the occupation, dispossession, and killing that Palestinians saw this week,” linking the immediate Hebron closure to broader consequences for Palestinians across the occupied West Bank and Gaza.
