Pezeshkian Meets Tamim

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Moscow on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 8th summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Iranian state media said.

The leaders reviewed the latest state of relations between Tehran and Doha and emphasized the importance of expanding political and economic ties, with state television saying, “The two sides reviewed the current state of relations between Tehran and Doha and emphasized the importance of deepening political and economic ties and making use of existing potential to strengthen bilateral cooperation,”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Pezeshkian would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow this week, and Araghchi said the meeting would follow up on discussions held during Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's visit to Tehran on Oct. 19.

Qatar continued mediating between Iran and the US, with negotiations between the two sides still ongoing, as the meeting took place while the GECF summit convened major gas-exporting countries including Iran, Russia, Qatar and Algeria.

Energy Talks Amid Tensions

Qatar's Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Moscow on Tuesday as the Qatari delegation attended the eighth GECF summit. Qatar's Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QatarEnergy President and CEO Saad Sherida Al Kaabi met with Iran’s Acting Minister of Petroleum, Hamid Bovard, in Moscow on Tuesday at the sidelines of the 28th Ministerial Meeting of the GECF, and QatarEnergy said the discussions focused on energy relations and cooperation between Qatar and Iran.

Al Kaabi warned that disruptions in the Gulf could have far-reaching consequences for global trade and energy security, citing attacks on energy facilities and restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and he said Qatar’s own energy production facilities had been targeted in several attacks. Al Kaabi said it was “critical that we work together to protect energy infrastructure during times of conflict,” while he also reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to reliable energy supplies, particularly LNG, and said the country sought to “be a force for peace.”

GECF Coordination and Next Steps

Iran’s acting oil minister Hamid Bovard met Qatar’s Minister of Energy Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi and Libya’s Minister of oil and gas Khalifa Rajab Abdulsadek in Moscow on Monday on the sidelines of the 28th Ministerial Meeting of the GECF, Pars Today said citing IRNA. Bovard called for effective cooperation among GECF members, particularly major producers and exporters, to strengthen convergence and bilateral and multilateral dialogue, and he linked energy security, peace, regional stability, and critical infrastructure protection to respect for national sovereignty.

The Iranian president said the US-Israeli aggression against Iran earlier this year and the continued support of the US and its European allies for Israel’s destabilizing actions in West Asia had made regional energy transit routes insecure, and he said GECF leaders would discuss these security concerns at their summit in Moscow. The GECF summit in Moscow was set to bring leaders and high-ranking representatives together, and the forum was described as accounting for more than 70% of global natural gas supplies while Pezeshkian was scheduled to deliver a speech and hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines.
