In a post on X, Qalibaf questioned the effectiveness of US pressure on Tehran, writing, “We do not rely on American threats,” after Trump warned Washington would hit Tehran “very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder.”
Trump’s warnings included urging Iran to “immediately stop their highly paid proxies in Lebanon from causing trouble,” and threatening to take over the Strait of Hormuz and collect tolls, according to Fox News.
The first round of four-party talks involving Iran and the US, with mediation by Qatar and Pakistan, concluded in Switzerland on Sunday, Iran’s Fars news agency reported, citing a source familiar with the Iranian negotiating team.
Walkout and competing claims
Iran’s response to Trump’s threats played out alongside the Switzerland talks, where Iran’s delegation was described as leaving the negotiating venue, with Iran’s state news agency IRNA saying, “The delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran… left the building.”
The South China Morning Post reported that the delegation walked out of the Swiss venue after Trump threatened to strike the Islamic republic over its support for Hezbollah, while a diplomat told Agence France-Presse that the Iranians had not quit the negotiations.

In parallel, TRT World said Qalibaf urged the US to “be careful” in its rhetoric and warned, “our armed forces are fully prepared to respond in a different way.”
The New Indian Express also framed the moment as Trump’s comments casting “shadow over Swiss talks,” quoting Ghalibaf saying, “They would do better to be careful with their statements.”
What’s at stake next
The talks were set to trigger a 60-day period to settle broader issues in US-Iranian relations, and the New Indian Express said the US is looking to get Iran locked into negotiations over its nuclear program amid concerns it may be used for military purposes, which Iran denies.

In the same reporting, the New Indian Express said Vance was pushing Tehran to commit to keeping open the Strait of Hormuz, described as the critical waterway through which about a fifth of world traded oil passes, while Trump’s comments from afar appeared to threaten to derail the negotiations.
Ynetnews reported that Iranian media said Tehran’s delegation was weighing how to respond after Trump warned it would be hit harder if it failed to restrain Hezbollah, and it quoted Trump’s Truth Social message: “Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble.”
Ynetnews also said Vance told the summit the sides were trying to achieve lasting change in the Middle East and that there had been “significant progress over the past two days toward preserving the ceasefire between the sides.”
