LAUSD and Teachers Union Reach Tentative Deal to Avert Strike

LAUSD and United Teachers Los Angeles reached a tentative two-year agreement early Sunday.

The deal includes an 11.65% salary increase and raises the starting teacher salary to about $77,000.

UTLA represents roughly 38,000 educators.

The union remains in solidarity with SEIU Local 99 and the Associated Administrators of Los Angeles.

The district faces the possibility of a strike involving three major unions representing nearly 70,000 employees.

Teachers are expected to honor picket lines in solidarity with SEIU Local 99.

SEIU Local 99 declared an impasse in December.

The Associated Administrators of Los Angeles is also still negotiating.

The district will continue to meet with remaining labor partners.

The agreement includes expanded mental health staffing and paid parental leave.

The union's contract expired last June.

LAUSD projected a $191 million deficit in the 2027-28 school year.

The unions pointed to $5 billion in reserves.

Inflation rates were at 3.3%, higher than the 3% immediate salary increase proposed.

The agreement carries an ongoing cost of around $650 million.
