Pezeshkian meets Khaled
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi, with the Iranian embassy confirming the encounter on social media.

The meeting took place as relations between Iran and the UAE came under strain after the outbreak of the war, with the Iranian embassy and multiple outlets linking the deterioration to Iranian attacks targeting US military assets in the UAE as part of Tehran’s retaliation for American strikes on Iranian installations.
The talks also came ahead of a proposed meeting between Iran, members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Iraq in Oman on September 14, with the expected focus including an agreement concerning transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
NDTV framed the New Delhi meeting as a high-level bilateral contact and said the embassy reported that Pezeshkian "held a meeting and talks" with the senior UAE official and published a photograph of the two men together.
The Jerusalem Post said Oman was hoping to host Gulf states and Iran at a meeting on Monday, and it cited Reuters reporting that "no signed Hormuz deal" was expected from the Oman meeting on Monday.
BRICS declaration and diplomacy
BRICS leaders adopted a joint declaration urging restraint in the Middle East/West Asia, with the Economic Times quoting the text: "We express deep concern over the continued escalation of tensions in Middle East/West Asia" and calling for maximum restraint.
The Economic Times also reported that the declaration urged protection of civilians and stressed the need to protect global trade, supply chains, energy flows and maritime security, while it said the Abu Dhabi media office posted on X without referring to any resolution to the discussions.
In a separate Reuters-sourced account, the Financial Express said four sources told Reuters that the bloc agreed on a joint declaration that was unlikely to name any country but would condemn unilateral war by any country.
The Financial Express added that representatives were engaged in bridging the divide between Iran and the United Arab Emirates to produce a consensus declaration, as the annual summit was held in New Delhi this weekend.
The Economic Times quoted former Indian ambassador to the UAE Sunjay Sudhir telling Reuters that "What India has done is keep the difficult conversations going" by showing countries of the region can sit at the same table and engage diplomatically.
What happens next for Gulf
The New Indian Express said the proposed Iran-GCC-Iraq meeting in Oman on September 14 was expected to focus on transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route that has been at the centre of the conflict.

The Jerusalem Post reported that Gulf News said Bahrain was not expected to attend and that Oman was hoping to host Gulf states and Iran at a meeting on Monday, while it also cited Reuters that the Oman meeting would be a chance to discuss issues including the Strait of Hormuz but was not expected to yield a signed agreement.
NDTV described India’s role as peacemaker during the BRICS sidelines, saying New Delhi used its presidency to push for dialogue and restraint as Iran and the United Arab Emirates held the high-level bilateral meeting in New Delhi.
NDTV also said Iran’s army targeted US military infrastructure at Ahmad al-Jaber Air Base in Kuwait and Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE, quoting the army statement that "the location of forces and radar systems" at Al Minhad were attacked by missiles and drones.
In the Reuters account carried by Global Banking & Finance Review, BRICS leaders were described as trying to bridge the Iran-UAE divide while the bloc faced split positions on the Gulf conflict, and it quoted Putin at a BRICS business forum saying "direct physical attacks or the destruction of industrial and logistical facilities" were among the competition’s "unsightly forms".
