Approval sinks on gas

President Donald Trump’s approval rating stayed near record lows in early June, with a Reuters/Ipsos poll showing 35% approval and 63% disapproval among 4,531 U.S. adults surveyed June 3-8.

The Hill tied the low approval to expectations that gasoline prices will continue rising due to the Iran war, saying the survey released Monday found 35 percent of Americans approved of Trump’s job performance in the White House.

The Hill also reported that the national average price of a gallon of gas stood at $4.24 on Monday, down 18 cents since last week, according to AAA, after being less than $3 in late February.

In the Reuters/Ipsos results, the poll’s margin of error was plus or minus 2 percentage points, and the survey was conducted online with responses from June 3-8.

Cost of living and Iran

The Hill said nearly 60 percent of Americans expect gas prices to worsen in the next year, compared to 17 percent who thought they would get better, and 23 percent said they were unsure or expected no change.

It also quoted Trump dismissing concerns about hiked costs during negotiations with Iran, saying, “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situations,” and adding, “Not even a little bit. “I don’t think about anybody.”

USA TODAY reported that the June Reuters/Ipsos poll showed just 22% of Americans approve of how Trump is managing the high cost of living, compared with 70% who disapprove.

USA TODAY further reported that regarding the Iran war, 36% of Americans approve of U.S. strikes, while only 25% believe the benefits outweigh the costs.

The Hill described the Reuters/Ipsos poll as collecting responses from 4,531 U.S. adults from June 3-8 in an online survey, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Pressure ahead of midterms

It also reported that just 37% of registered voters participating in the June Reuters/Ipsos poll think Republicans have a better plan for the economy, with Democrats right behind at 36%.

Forbes said Trump’s approval rating declined one point to 38% and disapproval increased two points to 62% in a new Marquette Law School poll, while it also cited his record-low approval of 34% for his second term in April.

Forbes added that the poll found 59% of respondents expect gas prices to rise more over the next year because of the Iran war, and that 22% of Americans are satisfied with Trump’s handling of cost of living.

The Hill described mounting political pressures ahead of the 2026 midterm election cycle as economic concerns and affordability issues, including surging gas prices, continue to weigh on Americans.
