Direct flights discussed

Syria and Egypt discussed restoring direct flights between the two countries as part of efforts to strengthen civil aviation cooperation and air connectivity, with talks in Damascus bringing together Omar Hosari of Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport and an Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority delegation led by Yasser Mohamed Abdel Halim Mohamed. SANA said the meeting focused on restoring air links to facilitate passenger travel, boost air traffic and strengthen bilateral relations, and that Hosari said the Egyptian delegation would visit Damascus and Aleppo international airports to review aviation security and safety measures, operational procedures, infrastructure, facilities and passenger services.

The talks followed a July 12 meeting between Hosari and Egypt’s chargé d’affaires in Damascus, Mohamed el-Feki, which also addressed civil aviation cooperation and restoring air links. The Egyptian delegation’s visit was also described as beginning on Sunday, August 30, 2026, to the Syrian capital Damascus, with the aim of discussing resuming direct flights between Egypt and Syria and re-linking the Damascus and Cairo airports.

Airport visits and security

Syrian Al-Ikhbariyah channel, as cited by صحيفة أحوال الإلكترونية, said the Egyptian delegation led by Yasser Mohamed Abdel Haleem Mohamed met Omar Al-Hosry in Damascus in the presence of the chargé d’affaires of the Egyptian Embassy in Damascus, Mohamed El-Feki. The channel said the meeting discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Syria and Egypt, foremost among them working to resume direct flights and restore air connectivity between Damascus and Cairo, to facilitate passenger movement and boost air transport.

Anadolu Ajansı reported that Omar Al-Hosry said the Egyptian delegation would conduct field tours at Damascus and Aleppo international airports to review the procedures and arrangements in the areas of aviation security and safety, operational procedures, infrastructure, and facilities and services provided to travelers. Anadolu Ajansı also quoted Al-Hosry saying, “We are rebuilding and expanding the Syrian air connectivity network regionally and internationally, and Egypt represents an important and natural hub within this network due to the historic ties and strong social, economic links between the two countries.”

Technical talks and aircraft

The resumption effort was linked to earlier Egyptian statements, with Anadolu Ajansı saying that on July 27, Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Samah Al-Hefni told a press interview that the return of direct air travel between Egypt and Syria “will be very soon,” confirming ongoing technical talks. Al-Jazeera Net said Al-Hosry discussed the resumption of direct flights and reestablishing air links between Damascus and Cairo, and it quoted the authority working on “rebuilding and expanding the Syrian air connectivity network regionally and internationally,” adding that “Egypt represents an important and natural stop within this network, given the historic and social, economic ties.”

Al-Jazeera Net also reported that Al-Hosry announced the reception of the first two of eight Airbus A320 aircraft, as part of “commitments related to the Damascus International Airport development project with Eurabacon Holding Company, which includes supporting and updating the national carrier’s fleet.” It further said the Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport signed, in November 2025, contracts for the Damascus International Airport development, expansion, and operation with a multinational consortium led by Qatar-based Eurabacon Holding Company, with participation from Jenkis and Kalion Turkish, and Ests American, with a four-billion-dollar investment.
