Syria closes Nassib-Jaber border crossing with Jordan, suspending passenger and commercial traffic. Jordanian airstrikes kill seven, including three children, in Daraa and al-Suwayda.
Nasib crossing shut
Syria announced the closure of the Nassib-Jaber border crossing with Jordan, effective Tuesday, after Jordan carried out airstrikes on Syrian territory in Daraa province. The Syrian General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs said in a statement that passenger and commercial traffic was suspended in both directions due to developments on the ground in Daraa province.
Jordan said its airstrikes were in retaliation for Friday’s attack on a Greek Orthodox Church in the southern Jordanian city of Karak that killed nine people, and the Jordanian air force said the operation resulted in the killing and wounding of many members of these terrorist groups and the destruction of a number of their vehicles. Syrian health officials and sources said the strikes killed at least 7 civilians, including women and children, while Damascus criticized the action as carried out without prior cooperation with Syrian authorities.
Damascus and Jordan trade claims
Damascus said Jordan’s operation was carried out without prior coordination and announced investigations to determine the circumstances of the airstrikes, while it opened channels of communication with Jordan. SANA quoted a government statement saying, “There was no prior coordination with the Syrian side regarding this military operation.”
The Jordanian army confirmed carrying out an air operation on Monday, named “Jordanian Deterrence–Hamad,” targeting what it described as “the dens of terrorist organizations in southern Syria.” Syrian health authorities in Daraa province reported the death of six people, including three children and a woman, revising a previous toll that had indicated eight deaths, while the Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) confirmed the casualty figure and said another man died in a strike that targeted Suwayda.
Traffic halted, investigations begin
Syria’s border authority announced the closure of the Nasib crossing and the complete suspension of passenger traffic and all cross-border trade in both directions, citing security conditions and developments on the ground in Daraa governorate. The authority said the suspension was intended “to protect the safety of travelers and the workers at the crossing,” and it set no date for reopening the crossing or resuming normal operations.
Jordanian airstrikes followed the church attack in Karak governorate, where gunmen opened fire during a funeral inside a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud, killing nine people and wounding 34. Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said it informed the Jordanian side of its complete reservation about carrying out operations inside Syrian territory without prior coordination, while it stressed the continuation of communication to deal with the repercussions of the event while preserving Syria’s sovereignty and security.
