Bread price rumor denied

The Syrian Ministry of Economy and Industry denied circulating reports that the price of the subsidized bread bundle would rise to 6,000,000 old Syrian pounds starting from tomorrow, Saturday. Hassan al-Ahmad, director of the Media Department at the Ministry of Economy, told the Syrian News Agency that the price of the bread bundle is 4,000,000 old Syrian pounds (40 new Syrian pounds) with no change.

Al-Ahmad said citizens should not be swayed by rumors and should follow official data only from their official sources. The denial came as social media circulated claims linking a bread-price increase to a rise in fuel prices, according to the report.

Fuel hikes, bread unchanged

On Friday, July 24, the Syrian Petroleum Company raised fuel prices in Syria starting at dawn without an official announcement on its platforms, while the Ministry of Economy denied raising bread prices. Sami Al-Galoul, head of the Committee of Fuel Station Owners in Damascus and Rural Damascus, told Enab Baladi that the price per liter of 95-octane gasoline rose to 149 Syrian pounds (new) from 147, and that 90-octane gasoline rose to 145 Syrian pounds (new) from 142.

He said diesel rose to 121 Syrian pounds (new) compared with 120 in the previously adopted pricing, while domestic and industrial gas cylinders remained at 1,470 Syrian pounds (new) and 2,350 Syrian pounds (new) with no change. In parallel, Hassan Al-Ahmad told Enab Baladi on Friday, July 24 that the price of the ration bread bundle remains 4,000 old Syrian pounds (40 new pounds) with no change.

Production scale and prior changes

The Ministry of Economy and Industry also tied the bread-ration policy to earlier adjustments, including a June announcement reducing the number of loaves in the bread ration from 10 to 8 while keeping the loaf’s weight and its current price unchanged. Hassan al-Ahmad said the decision came in response to rising production costs and aimed to ease operational burdens on bakeries while preserving the citizen’s share and the price of the basic material without imposing any additional costs on them.

The Syrian Bakery Foundation produces 4,500 tons, equal to about 4.4 million loaves of bread daily, produced in 1,693 bakeries across all provinces, with flour distributed to mills through the Foundation and the Resources Department in cooperation with the Grain Foundation. In the same reporting, the ministry’s denial of the 6,000-old-lira claim was framed as a call to rely on official authorities for information about the ministry’s work and procedures.
