Taylor Farms Recalls Jalapeño Salsas And Guacamole After Coast Citrus Distributors Salmonella Outbreak

Taylor Farms is voluntarily recalling prepared foods containing jalapeños after being notified that Coast Citrus Distributors was recalling fresh jalapeños due to a salmonella outbreak that sickened more than 300 people.

The recall covers products including salsas and guacamole, distributed at retailers such as Walmart, Target, Kroger, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, with a “Best If Used By” date up to and including Aug. 16, 2026.

NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth reported that the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were working with state and local partners to investigate illnesses in a multistate outbreak of salmonella infections linked to fresh jalapeños supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors.

The company said it identified a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico as the potential source, and Taylor Fresh Foods said it is no longer sourcing products from the farmer and will be filling orders from alternative suppliers.

The CDC said last week that at least 345 people in 27 states have been sickened, with 36 hospitalizations reported, and Minnesota and Colorado account for the vast majority of cases with 110 cases each.

Ars Technica reported that the FDA’s outbreak notice said illnesses started being reported on June 19 and that outbreak investigators interviewed 191 cases, with 177 reporting eating at Mexican-style restaurants including Chipotle and Qdoba.

Ars Technica also said Chipotle stopped using jalapeños from Coast Citrus on July 20 and Qdoba similarly ditched the peppers on July 28, while the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the outbreak on Wednesday, August 5.

Taylor Farms said it was no longer sourcing from the Sinaloa, Mexico grower identified as the potential source, and it said it was unaware of any reported illnesses linked to its products containing jalapeños.

Walmart told CBS News it removed impacted products from its stores and implemented a sales block at its registers as well as online, while Whole Foods told CBS News it pulled all the recalled items from its shelves and advised customers who purchased them to throw them away and contact it for a refund.

NBC News said the U.S. investigation identified restaurants including Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba as having received jalapeños imported by Coast Citrus Distributors, and it said both restaurants stopped using them while Coast Citrus recalled the remaining product and notified customers.

The recall arrives as Taylor Farms is already facing heightened scrutiny over an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, and NBC News said the FDA linked the cyclosporiasis to Taylor Farms products from central Mexico, while Taylor Farms said the regulator had not confirmed positive sample tests for cyclospora on its lettuce as of August 5.
