Thousands of protesters gathered outside the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington on Friday evening, forming a human chain around the building as they opposed President Donald Trump’s threats to close and demolish the venue.

The demonstrations followed photos of Trump aboard Air Force One reviewing a placard that read “Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED,” and the crowd rallied in the Foggy Bottom area, with traffic locked down as people walked to the site.
Chris Raleigh, co-founder of Hands Off the Arts, said in an interview that he hoped the event would show that people are willing to fight to keep Trump’s plans for the building at bay.
A judge ordered the Kennedy Center to provide 30 days’ notice before making any major physical changes to the building, including demolishing it, after lawyers for Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty cited Trump’s warning that the center could be “ripped down.”
Voices clash over intent
ABC News quoted Miller, a former assistant manager of dance programming at the Kennedy Center, saying, “The Kennedy Center can't be renamed for anyone else. It's a memorial to John F. Kennedy.”
In the same ABC News account, Miller added, “Artists are the risk takers in our society,” as she described creating “the world that comes next” and said the building “belongs to the American people, not one person and it's our Kennedy Center.”
The AP reported that Bud Wilkinson, a local member of the arts community, set up a chalkboard with Trump’s name written hundreds of times, and Wilkinson said, “This is not just about putting the president’s name on the Kennedy Center.”
Wilkinson told the AP that the issue was also “about censoring the performances and the programming,” and he said, “That’s why I want to replace all of this with love. That’s why there’s a heart.”

The protest unfolded as the Kennedy Center’s Trump-aligned board voted Tuesday to close the center indefinitely for repairs, hours after U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper blocked plans to return Trump’s name to the building.
