Trump announces White House ban
U.S. President Donald Trump announced he was banning CNN, MS NOW (formerly MSNBC) and Politico from entering the White House “with immediate effect,” citing “misinformation” in a Truth Social post.

The BBC said Trump claimed the outlets “constantly write or report fiction or lies” about his administration, while also saying it was a “very simple ban” and not explaining how it would work.
The BBC reported it was unclear whether employees of the affected outlets would be prevented from entering the White House grounds, and noted that reporters from both Politico and CNN were still on the White House grounds shortly after the announcement.
In the same BBC account, Trump later told reporters in the Oval Office that there was “no reason” for the announcement being made on Friday afternoon, adding that it was “really just cumulative stories over the last few years” and “You get sick of it.”
Outlets and press groups react
CNN denounced the move as an “illegal assault” on American press freedoms, saying in a statement that it had “a right under the U.S. Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government.”
Politico said it would “continue to fairly report on this White House and future ones,” and added that it would “vigorously defend our First Amendment rights against any attempt to restrict them.”
The White House Correspondents’ Association President Jacqui Heinrich said it stood in “defence” of colleagues who were “being singled out for doing their jobs,” and she said the issue was “about the right of the American people to receive a full and independent account.”
In a separate account, the National Press Club criticized the ban as an attempt to control which voices could witness and report on presidential power, with Mark Schoeff Jr. saying it was “a clear attempt to control which voices are allowed to witness and report on the exercise of presidential power.”
Legal fights and wider precedent
The BBC said the move was “likely to be met with legal challenges,” and it noted that Trump’s announcement followed a pattern of clashes with the White House press corps since returning to office in January 2025.

The BBC also recalled that in February the White House announced it was taking control of the press pool and that the administration moved to bar Associated Press (AP) reporters and photographers from limited-access spaces such as the Oval Office or Air Force One after AP used the term “Gulf of Mexico” instead of “Gulf of America.”
Al Jazeera reported that the National Press Club and other groups criticized the ban as an attack on the free press, while Tim Richardson of PEN America said: “Someone needs to explain to President Trump how the First Amendment works,” and Seth Stern of the Freedom of the Press Foundation said: “These outrageous attacks only demonstrate how scared he is of an informed public.”A
