Papua military construction dispute
LBH Papua urged the Regional Military Commander (Pangdam XVII/Cenderawasih), the Biak Numfor Regent and the Papua provincial parliament (DPRP) to implement recommendations by Indonesia’s National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) on a customary land dispute at the construction site of the Infantry Battalion TP 858/MSB headquarters in Oridek District, East Biak.
LBH Papua said Komnas HAM issued recommendation letter No. 015/PM.00.00/R-06/IX/2026 on 24 September 2026 after a complaint submitted on 16 March 2026 by LBH Papua as legal counsel for Mr Apolos Sroyer.
LBH Papua reported that Komnas HAM concluded that the dispute over ownership and control of the land had caused polarisation and violence within the indigenous community, and that it could spread if not resolved quickly.
LBH Papua said it had urged that all land clearing and construction stop until the dispute over customary ownership and the status of the area is resolved, and it linked the demand to free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) set out in Article 32(2) of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Telangana land dispute killing
Katrawath Sunitha, a 26-year-old woman in Mahabubnagar, was attacked with sharp weapons and killed after a dispute over land registered in her name. The accused allegedly beheaded Sunitha before fleeing the scene, and police registered a murder case against four persons: Manya Naik, Pandu Naik, Parvathi and Manikya Naik.
Koilkonda Circle Inspector Gandhi Naik and Sub-Inspector Nagaraju said the preliminary investigation pointed to a land dispute as the suspected motive for the killing. Sunitha had married Katrawath Balaram of Chintal Thanda around a decade ago and a settlement facilitated by village elders reportedly registered around 1.5 acres of agricultural land in Sunitha’s name to secure her future.
Tennessee appeals court boundary
A Tennessee Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s ruling in Developed by Design, LLC v. James M. Travis et al., finding that James M Travis and his wife, Mary M Travis, had failed to establish ownership through adverse possession.
The appeals court decision was issued on October 29, 2026, and it found that the couple’s activities, including mowing, gardening and holding yard sales, were not sufficient to satisfy the legal requirements.
Developed by Design, LLC acquired approximately 43.39 acres of undeveloped land in Rhea County, Tennessee, and the company sought to confirm its rights to a 30-foot right-of-way across the Travises’ property.
Judge Thomas R. Frierson II delivered the appeals court’s opinion, joined by Chief Judge Frank G Clement Jr. and Judge Steven W Maroney, and it remanded the case to the trial court for execution of the judgment and collection of costs.
