Abu al-Duhur Strike
U.S. envoy Tom Barrack, described as the U.S. ambassador to Turkey and special envoy to Syria and Iraq, criticized Israel’s control of the Golan Heights and discussed last Tuesday’s IDF bombing of the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northern Syria, saying it was likely the result of a “misunderstanding or coordination failure.”

In response, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israel had clear intelligence indicating that Turkey planned to take actions at the site that would endanger Israeli security, and that “When the Syrian regime did not heed the warning, the strike was authorized and successfully carried out.”
The dispute over the strike and the Golan unfolded as Turkey called for Interpol to issue a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to arrest Netanyahu and other Israeli officials on charges including genocide, according to the Jerusalem Post analysis.
The same episode was also framed in the Yaffa News Network report as a direct exchange between Barrack and Katz, with Barrack describing the Golan as an “occupation that violates United Nations resolutions and the entire international order.”
Barrack vs. Israeli Officials
Barrack’s remarks drew criticism in Jerusalem, with the Jerusalem Post saying his comments raised eyebrows because he contradicted U.S. policy on the Golan and disputed Israel’s threat assessment.
The Jerusalem Post reported that Katz responded by calling Barrack’s position “full of inaccuracies” and saying it contradicts Trump’s own policy on the Golan Heights.
In parallel, the Al-Jazirah Net report said Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi described Barrack’s statements as “full of fallacies,” arguing they conflict with the U.S. administration’s stance on the Golan Heights.
That same Al-Jazirah Net account also described Israeli director Michael Bahgin saying Barrack’s statements align with positions considered hostile to Israel, and it quoted activist Emily Schrider calling for Barrack’s dismissal and asking, “He should be removed immediately.”
Regional Stakes in Syria
The Yaffa News Network report tied the Barrack-Katz exchange to a broader Syria context, stating that since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on Syria, primarily targeting military sites.

It also reported that the Syrian Foreign Ministry held Israel fully responsible for the consequences of its repeated attacks, while Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani condemned the attack on Abu al-Duhur airbase and stressed that there was no justification for it.
In the same dispute, the Jerusalem Post analysis said Barrack’s dual role as ambassador to Turkey and special envoy to Syria matters because he is supposed to mediate a potential Israel–Syria security arrangement, but by publicly crediting the Turkish-Syrian account over Israel’s he may have undermined his standing in Jerusalem.
The Al-Jazirah Net report added that Netanyahu’s office said “Israel and Syria have agreed on the status quo in security matters,” while Ankara denied having Turkish forces at the site, keeping the question of Turkey’s deployment near Aleppo central to what comes next.
