Midterms, Hormuz, and escalation

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the war against Iran will end immediately after the midterm elections in the United States, while adding, "We will launch additional attacks against Tehran."

In parallel, Iranian state television reported on Wednesday that "an explosion was heard near the Strait of Hormuz," without announcing the nature of the incident or its source.

Trump also told reporters that negotiations with Iran may take place, even as he framed the conflict around the Strait of Hormuz and the flow of shipping.

The Al-.Khaleej report also said Trump claimed the strait is open, citing the crossing of 24 ships in a single day, while noting this number remains limited compared with the pre-conflict average of about 130 ships per day.

Against that backdrop, Al-Arabi Al-Jadid described the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran as entering its sixth month and said Trump’s plans shifted toward tightening the economic squeeze and imposing severe sanctions on any country or entity that deals with Iran.

Advisers push de-escalation

Reuters, as cited by Al-Jazeera Net, said senior advisers to Donald Trump are pressing to curb escalation before the midterm elections scheduled for November, with plans to consider escalation of military action after the voting.

A White House official quoted by Al-Jazeera Net said, 'We continue to press Iran... but November is a priority.'

The same Reuters report said the U.S. Army stated that the latest airstrikes were in response to attacks targeting its forces and shipping in the region, while also describing a tactical pause aimed at increasing economic pressure on Tehran.

Al-Jazeera Net also reported that Barbara Leaf said the Iranian regime has incentives to destabilize the détente because the administration's explicit goal is to heavily increase economic pressure.

Meanwhile, Trump’s own messaging included a threat on Truth Social that if the Iranian regime responds to a "very justified attack," it will face "an even bigger and stronger strike."

Oil prices, politics, and pressure

As the war drags on toward the November midterms, Trump told reporters that oil prices that have spiked because of the Iran war likely won’t come down until after the U.S. midterm elections.

In a CNBC account of the same remarks, Trump said, "Right after the election, oil prices are going to be tumbling downward," and added, "I think it’s very easy to explain to America."

CNBC reported that global benchmark Brent crude futures traded above $101 per barrel for the first time since July, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures surpassed $96 per barrel at session highs.

CNN reported that Trump conceded American gas prices are unlikely to fall before then, saying, "I think it’s going to take a little bit longer than the midterm," and linking the political timing to Iran’s effort to damage him politically.

CNN also said the average gas price nationwide is now $4.22 per gallon and that diesel prices have also soared, with the average hitting a record $5.94 per gallon Wednesday.
