Trump threatens Iran at UN
Donald Trump used his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York to frame a “big decision” on Iran, presenting negotiating with Tehran or intensifying the military offensive against the Islamic Republic. Trump told leaders gathered in New York, “Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly?” and he added, “Do I lead them to hell with no chance of survival or a future?”

Trump said he believes a deal could be reached after the midterm elections in the United States, and he argued that he would not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. Trump also reiterated that the United States aims to prevent Tehran from posing a threat again, while he defended his policy toward Iran as he spoke before the General Assembly.
Walkouts and open talks
Iranian representatives walked out of the General Assembly hall during Trump’s speech, and the reports described only one delegate remaining seated as the address continued. Trump told the chamber that he faced a “big decision” over whether to pursue a deal with Tehran or take further military action, and he asked, “Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly,” while adding that he believed a deal could be reached after the US election.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the administration was open to meeting with Iranian representatives within the framework of the Assembly, and Rubio described the objective as ensuring “that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.” Trump also said he believed “I believe we’ll make a deal right after the election,” and he urged “We must be equally united in maintaining pressure.”
Pressure, munitions, and stakes
Trump linked his Iran policy to continued pressure, and he thanked the UN Security Council for what he described as “overwhelming support” for a resolution condemning attacks on commercial shipping linked by his administration to Iran. Trump said the US Navy had escorted more than 1 billion barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, and he claimed oil flows were higher than at any point since the start of the war.
Trump dismissed claims that the prolonged conflict had strained American military stockpiles, saying, “We have more munitions than we could ever possibly even think of using,” while he also said US production was increasing. Trump’s remarks also placed the war’s trajectory in the spotlight for the November midterm elections, and he told the chamber, “I believe we’ll make a deal right after the election because it doesn’t make sense for them not to.”
