Summit, stability, no breakthroughs
President Donald Trump spent 43 hours in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and the summit produced “no major breakthroughs and few agreements,” leaving both sides with a “more stable footing” in their “most important — and often volatile — bilateral relationship.”
The Washington Post described the outcome as a “frictionless summit” that brought China “closer to a more stable footing,” even as it said there were “no major breakthroughs” and “few agreements.”
NBC News reported that Trump appeared to raise doubts about long-standing U.S. policy on Taiwan after his summit, saying he had not yet decided whether to proceed with arms sales to Taiwan.
In Beijing, Xi warned that mishandling Taiwan could lead to “clashes and even conflicts,” according to a readout from China’s foreign ministry carried by NBC News.
NBC News also said Trump told Fox News he was “not looking to have somebody go independent” when asked about whether the U.S. would come to Taiwan’s rescue in the event of a Chinese invasion.
Taiwan pushback and warnings
Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te pushed back on Trump’s warnings by saying that “Only the Taiwanese people can decide their future,” after Trump appeared to raise doubts about long-standing U.S. policy during his trip to China.
NBC News quoted Lai Ching-te saying Taiwan “is a sovereign and independent democratic nation, and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China,” citing a statement from Taiwan’s foreign ministry.

Xi called Taiwan “the most important issue in China-U.S. relations,” and NBC News reported Xi told Trump that mishandling Taiwan would mean “putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy.”
Trump said Friday that he was “not looking to have somebody go independent” and added that he wants both sides to “cool down,” while NBC News reported he told Fox News he was “supposed to travel 9,500 miles to fight a war.”
NBC News also reported that Taiwan’s presidential office spokesperson Karen Kuo said the office had received “multiple reaffirmations” from the U.S., including from Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, that U.S. policy toward Taiwan “remain unchanged.”
Tariffs, agriculture, and councils
After the Trump-Xi summit, China and the United States agreed to expand agricultural trade through tariff reductions and tackle non-tariff barriers and market access issues, China's commerce ministry said on Saturday, with the agreements described as “preliminary” and to be “finalised as soon as possible.”
“US President Donald Trump’s visit to China this week may have been short on immediate deals addressing frictions over tech and trade”
Reuters reported that China’s farm imports from the U.S. still face an additional 10% levy after last year’s tit-for-tat tariffs, and that trade fell 65.7% year-on-year to $8.4 billion in 2025, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data.
Reuters also said China resumed purchases of some U.S. farm goods after an October meeting, fulfilling a U.S.-stated commitment to buy 12 million metric tons of soybeans by the end of February.
Al Arabiya reported that Beijing said China and the United States agreed to establish trade and investment councils, with the Trade Council used to discuss tariff reductions on certain products.
Al Arabiya added that the White House said China pledged to buy American agricultural products worth no less than $17 billion from this year through 2028, and that the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said further talks on details were still ongoing.
