Hormuz ship fire reported
A British navy maritime agency reported a ship was burning in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, while the agency said it did not give details on the cause of the blaze or any casualties.
“The agency, which is run by the British Royal Navy, did not give details on the cause of the blaze or any casualties.”
UKMTO said the captain of another ship had reported the blaze onboard a vessel spotted 9 nautical miles north of the town of Khasab in Oman, and it said the status of the crew was unknown.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps said in a statement that three tankers exploded and caught fire in the past 24 hours after hitting sea mines while using an "unauthorized" route.
Iran’s foreign minister said Wednesday that the country "continues to give diplomacy a chance," as a CBS News official said Qatari mediators presented Iran with a new draft deal to end the war.
CBS News said Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth fired Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia after he was accused of leaking classified information related to the Iran war.
IRGC blames route
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps said the three tankers had switched off all their radar and navigation systems and were trying to exit through the unauthorized southern route of the Strait of Hormuz when they struck naval mines and exploded. The IRGC said the vessels were subsequently stranded along the southern shores of the strait, and it said the IRGC held the vessels’ owners and crews responsible for using the route. The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps Navy said the unauthorized route is unsafe and told owners and crews of vessels not to pay attention to CENTCOM’s illusions.
The Times of Israel said it was unclear whether there were injuries, or who had laid the ordnance, after the IRGC said the tankers exploded and caught fire. DW said the reported ship fire came as Iran reported shooting down another US drone east of the waterway, and it said fears of a new escalation in the US-Iran war were growing.
Diplomacy, escalation, and risk
CBS News said an official briefed on the diplomacy confirmed that Qatari mediators presented Iran with a new draft deal to end the war, and it said a response was expected from Tehran by the end of the week. DW said oil exports through the waterway fell again last week, and it said attacks on ships in the strait were at the highest level since the war began, according to Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Mehr News Agency quoted the IRGC Navy saying any provocative action backed by the terrorist and aggressor US army that disregards the strait's regulations will be dealt with decisively.
CBS News said U.S. officials told several Middle Eastern countries and regional allies to prepare for possible renewed military action against Iran after next week’s midterm elections, and it said President Trump had not made a final decision on whether to carry out new strikes. DW said Trump was widely seen to be considering fresh strikes against Iran after the US midterm elections on November 3, and it cited Trump saying, "we may do another little Epic Fury," referring to the US-Israeli attacks on Tehran in February.
