The elections will include the renewal of all 435 House seats, plus five of the six non-voting delegates representing the District of Columbia and inhabited territories.

The same day will also determine who will occupy major federal and state posts for the next years, with the governors’ races drawing one of the largest shares of attention.

The MEXC report says the 3 November 2026 vote will be held in 36 states and three territories, and that governors elected in 2022 will be back in dispute except in New Hampshire and Vermont.

It adds that the House representatives elected will assume their functions in the 120th Congress of the United States, with seats assigned according to the 2020 national census and district maps.

Tuesday Primaries Focus

Tuesday is described as a big primary day for the 2026 midterms, with primaries in Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

NPR says the day will be the busiest primary election day of the 2026 midterms so far, with voters weighing in on key contests up and down the ballot in six states across several time zones.

In Alabama, NPR notes that redistricting efforts across the South continue following a recent SCOTUS decision that makes Alabama’s primary “a bit confusing,” with primaries for specific congressional districts rescheduled.

In Georgia, NPR says Republicans dominate spending and Democrats drive record turnout, and it highlights that many top races are likely to head to runoffs, including the Republican race to face incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff.

NPR also says Oregon’s closed primary system means “a plurality of the state's registered voters will have no say in those contests until the November general election.”

Idaho Stakes and Candidates

Al Jazeera frames Idaho’s Tuesday primary as part of a solidly red enclave, noting that it is “nestled in the northwest, close to the United States border with Canada.”

It says Idaho’s Republican primaries are expected to send winners to November’s general election, while also describing the vote as a bellwether for the future of the Republican Party under President Donald Trump’s leadership.

For governor, Al Jazeera says Gov. Brad Little, a 72-year-old rancher, is campaigning for a third term and faces seven other candidates in the Republican primary.

On the Democratic side, Al Jazeera says four candidates are vying for the party nomination, with former public defender Terri Pickens described as the best funded after out-raising her competitors by a double-digit factor.

Al Jazeera also reports that in the Senate primary, former Idaho governor Jim Risch is seeking a fourth term and that in January he received an endorsement from Trump, who called the Idaho politician one of his “strongest allies” in the Senate.
