According to the military, many of the recent strikes focused on Hamas operatives involved in building up the terror group’s force and civil control mechanisms in the Strip. Implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza has stalled, with Hamas refusing to disarm and Israel refusing to withdraw from any part of Gaza until that condition is met. The Times of Israel relays the Israeli military's account of six men it killed and, in places, states that account in its own voice, calling the targets terrorists who took part in 7 October with no basis but the army's word. It ends the passage on the army's claim that the men were 'in systematic violation of the ceasefire' and never reports Hamas's denial, which Reuters carried the same day. Palestinian deaths on Monday are tagged to a 'Hamas-run' ministry and Hamas-affiliated media, while the army's claims about who it killed get no such caveat.

  1. Labels people on one side's word

    Severe

“including numerous terrorists who took part in the Hamas-led October 7 atrocities”

    Why this matters
In its own voice the Times of Israel calls the people Israel has been killing in Gaza 'numerous terrorists who took part in the Hamas-led October 7 atrocities'. Only the closing 'saying they posed a threat' is attributed to Israel; the label and the 7 October involvement are not.
    The impression it gives
That it is established fact that many of those killed in these strikes were 7 October attackers.
    The context
The only source for who these men were is the Israeli military. Elsewhere the article itself attributes each such identification to the army, and Hamas denies the army's account of its members' activity.

  2. Gives a contested claim the last word

    Serious

“in systematic violation of the ceasefire”

    Why this matters
The article closes its account of the six killings on the army's claim that the men were advancing attacks 'in systematic violation of the ceasefire'. It then adds more army claims and sets nothing against them.
    The impression it gives
That the killings answered proven Hamas ceasefire breaches, and that nobody disputes this.
    The context
Reuters reported the same day that Hamas denies trying to carry out attacks or rebuild its arsenal and accuses Israel of undermining the deal. Reuters also reported that at least 1,580 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire, while Israel says four soldiers have been killed.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

  3. States one side's claim as fact

    Minor

“Mohannad Nader Mahmoud Dahdouh, a sniper commander”

    Why this matters
The sentence names two men killed on Saturday and gives their roles, Nabil Hamad as a Hamas 'recruitment apparatus' department head and Dahdouh as 'a sniper commander', with no attribution. The sentences either side say 'the IDF said'; this one does not.
    The impression it gives
That the roles of these two dead men are verified fact.
    The context
These identifications come only from the Israeli military's statement, as the neighbouring sentences show and as i24News reports them. No independent source confirms them.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

  4. Doubts one side's dead and not the other's

    Minor

    “the Hamas-run health ministry said”

    Why this matters
The article tags the source for a Palestinian killed in Al-Mussadar as 'Hamas-run'. It also calls the source for the Tel al-Hawa death 'affiliated with Hamas' and opens with the Palestinians 'reportedly' killed.
    The impression it gives
That the Palestinian deaths are doubtful partisan claims, while the army's account of whom it killed is solid.
    The context
Reuters reports the same deaths plainly, citing 'the territory's health officials'. The article gives the army's identifications of the six men no comparable caveat.
