Qatar’s Al Jazeera on Friday aired Hamas footage of the terror group’s leaders in the Gaza Strip, from several years before the October 7 war. One clip broadcast on Al Jazeera’s “The Hidden Is More Immense” documentary series, and published shortly after by Hamas on its Telegram channel, showed top commanders in the terror group’s military wing gathering in a tunnel. The video showed Mohammed Deif, then commander of Hamas’s military wing, sitting on a bed at the end of an underground room, with the rest of the Al-Qassam Brigades’ leadership, including department heads and brigade commanders, on a carpet.

All those seen in the footage have since been killed by Israel, including Deif, Marwan Issa, Raad Saad, Mohammed Shabana, Mohammed Sinwar, Ahmed Ghandour, Ayman Nofal, Rafa Salama, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, Mohammed Odeh, Hakam al-Issa, Raed Thabet, Ghazi Abu Tamaa and Bassem Issa. The images were taken sometime prior to May 2021, as Bassem Issa, then commander of the Gaza City Brigade, was killed during the 11-day war that month, known in Israel as Operation Guardian of the Walls.

The Times of Israel reports that Al Jazeera aired archive Hamas footage of commanders Israel has since killed, and it names Israel as the killer in its own voice. It also states as plain fact, with no attribution, that Al Jazeera is banned in Israel because of its close ties to Hamas. That is the Israeli authorities' accusation, and the paper presents it as settled.

  1. States one side's claim as fact

    Serious

“which has been banned from operating in Israel due to its close ties to the terror group”

    Why this matters
The words "due to its close ties to the terror group" give the Israeli government's reason for banning Al Jazeera in the outlet's own voice, with no one named as making the claim.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it as established fact that Al Jazeera has close ties to Hamas, and that this is why the ban exists.
    The context
The reason for the ban is the Israeli authorities' accusation against a news network, not a finding the article reports or supports. The article never says who made the accusation and gives no evidence for it beyond Hamas releasing footage that Al Jazeera broadcast. The accusation itself is never marked as alleged or attributed.

    How we know

    • Checked against the whole articleIt never uses the words “alleged”.

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

Israel has banned Al Jazeera from operating in the country, with the Israeli authorities accusing the network of close ties to Hamas.
