Report: Shin Bet letting choose to be killed alone or with their families

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.5 findings

, the Shin Bet security agency reportedly has been calling ahead of strikes, offering them a choice: Leave their homes and be killed alone, or be killed along with their family members. The report published Thursday in the Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat stated that such incidents occurred at least five times in recent months, citing Palestinian sources familiar with the cases, which could not be independently verified.

The Shin Bet and Israel Defense Forces have not commented on the report, which came amid intensifying scrutiny over civilian killings in the Gaza Strip that Israeli officials say are a result of Hamas’s tactics to embed its fighters and weapons caches within civilian areas. The report said Mohammad Alyan al-Bayouk, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis on Wednesday, was on the roof of his home when he was targeted. Before the strike, he received a phone call from Shin Bet officers, who allegedly told him to choose between being hit alone on the roof and sparing his family, or staying inside.

The article leaves out that the report's sources rejected any humanitarian reading of the calls and pointed to continuing Israeli strikes that killed civilians, including women and children. Without this, a reader believes the practice is a form of harm reduction.

The article never says that the Asharq Al-Awsat report did not establish al-Bayouk's affiliation or the intelligence behind targeting him. Without this, a reader believes the report and the IOF agree that he was a Hamas member.

It named the other three operatives as Hammam Jaber al-Sayed Abu Labda, Mahmoud Abu Naameh and Mohammed Hamad Shariq Abu Sultan, who the IDF said were together at the time of the strike in Rafah.

Later Friday, the IDF confirmed it also killed two terror operatives on Thursday in central Gaza’s Nuseirat, including Ihab Jamil Abu Taqiya. The military said he was a Hamas commander involved in holding hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, invasion of southern Israel that sparked the Gaza war, including Raya Rotem, Hila Rotem Shoshani, Emily Hand, Ohad Ben Ami, Noa Argamani, Andrey Kozlov, Shlomi Ziv, Almog Meir Jan, Maxim Herkin, Yosef Haim Ohana, Segev Kalfon and Alex Lobanov .

The same strike also killed Ibrahim Gihad Muhammad Abu Oshaiba, identified by the military as a Hamas platoon commander. Israel in recent months has increasingly targeted terror operatives in Gaza, including , saying they posed a threat to Israeli forces. Advertisement After a US-brokered ceasefire took hold in Gaza in October 2025, the so-called Yellow Line was established to divide the areas under Israeli control — recently expanded to some 63 percent of the territory — from those under Hamas control.

Hamas reportedly told a UN official earlier this month that it was prepared to carry out an October 7-style attack in Israel, the West Bank or abroad, following the IDF’s expansion past the Gaza ceasefire line and the Palestinian Authority’s cancellation of legislative elections in November. Implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza has stalled, with Hamas refusing to disarm and Israel refusing to withdraw from any part of Gaza until that condition is met.

The Times of Israel labels the men Israel targeted and killed as Hamas operatives and terrorists in its own voice, when its only basis is the IOF's identification and the source report did not establish the dead man's affiliation. It also states Israel's account of whom its strikes target as fact, and it leaves out that the report's sources rejected any humanitarian reading of the calls.

  1. Labels people on one side's word

    Severe

    “Hamas operatives”

    Why this matters
The headline calls the people targeted 'Hamas operatives' as plain fact, with no attribution.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it as established that every person Shin Bet called and killed was a Hamas member.
    The context
The only basis the article gives for al-Bayouk's affiliation is the IOF's word. The Asharq Al-Awsat report the headline rests on did not establish it.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

    “members of the terror group”

    Why this matters
The opening sentence describes the people Shin Bet called as 'members of the terror group' in the outlet's own voice.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the identity of all five or more people in the Asharq Al-Awsat report is known and confirmed.
    The context
The report cited Palestinian sources about the calls and did not set out who the men were. The one affiliation the article names comes from an IOF statement issued afterwards.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

“numerous terrorists who took part in the Hamas-led October 7 atrocities”

    Why this matters
The outlet states in its own voice that the people Israel killed include 'numerous terrorists' who took part in 7 October. It attributes only the threat claim ('saying they posed a threat') to Israel.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes it is independently established that many of those killed took part in 7 October.
    The context
Every identification in the article comes from the IOF. The source report for this story did not establish even the affiliation of the man at its centre.

    Written straight

Report: Shin Bet called men in Gaza before strikes, telling them to leave their homes or be killed with their families. The IOF later said the man killed in Khan Younis was a Hamas member; the report itself did not establish his affiliation.

  2. States one side's claim as fact

    Serious

“As Israel continues to target Hamas operatives in Gaza”

    Why this matters
The outlet states as fact, in its own voice, that Israel's strikes target Hamas operatives.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes Israel's continuing strikes hit Hamas members, not civilians.
    The context
That is Israel's account. The outlet's own earlier reporting attributed it to Israel and reported Israeli strikes killing children.

  3. States one side's claim as fact

    Minor

“two Hamas weapon depots were also destroyed”

    Why this matters
The outlet calls the struck sites 'Hamas weapon depots' in its own voice before attributing anything to the military.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the military's description of the sites as established.
    The context
The next sentence shows the description comes from the military alone.
