, including a top Hamas commander who held an Israeli hostage, were killed in Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip earlier this week, the military and Shin Bet security agency announced on Wednesday. One strike on Sunday in Gaza City killed Jamal Abu Saeed, who the Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet said served as chief of operations in Hamas’s military intelligence arm. “During the war, Abu Saeed held Omer Shem Tov captive on behalf of Hamas,” the joint statement said.

Shem Tov was abducted by Hamas terrorists from the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023, and was returned to Israel as part of a ceasefire-hostage release deal on February 22, 2025. Abu Saeed held other senior roles in Hamas over the years, including overseeing the training of Hamas operatives outside the Gaza Strip, serving as an anti-tank battalion commander, and being “responsible for military specialization in Hamas’s Central Brigade,” the military said.

Additionally, separate strikes on Monday in Khan Younis killed Mahmoud Jihad Mohammad Qafa, a commander of a Hamas sniper cell, and Asaad Suleiman Salman Qashta, a member of the Army of Islam faction who “facilitated smuggling into the Gaza Strip,” according to the military. The IDF said all of the operatives had recently been advancing attacks on troops and Israeli civilians and acted to restore the capabilities of the terror groups, “in systematic violation of the ceasefire.” במהלך השבוע: צה"ל ושב"כ חיסלו שישה מחבלים מארגוני טרור ברצועת עזה Advertisement בשתי תקיפות מוקדם יותר השבוע במרחב ח'אן יונס, צה"ל ושב"כ חיסלו את המחבל מחמוד גהאד מחמד קפה, ראש חוליית צליפה בזרוע הצבאית של ארגון הטרור חמאס ואת המחבל אסעד סלימאן סלמאן קשטה, מחבל מארגון הטרור 'צבא האסלאם' שקידם… pic.twitter.com/3qTn8ymMhD — צבא ההגנה לישראל (@idfonline) November 4, 2026 Israel in recent months has increasingly targeted operatives in Gaza, including numerous terrorists who took part in the Hamas-led October 7 invasion and massacre, saying they posed a threat to Israeli forces.

According to the military, many of the recent strikes have focused on Hamas operatives involved in building up the terror group’s force and civil control mechanisms in the Strip. Implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza has stalled, with Hamas refusing to disarm and Israel refusing to withdraw from any part of Gaza until that condition is met. What we found (1)

The Times of Israel relays the IOF's and Shin Bet's account of seven Palestinians killed in strikes in Gaza. In its own voice it calls the dead "terror operatives" and members of a "terror group". Its only source for who they were is the army and Shin Bet.

  1. Labels people on one side's word

    Serious

    “Seven Palestinian terror operatives”

    Why this matters
The Times of Israel opens its report by calling the seven dead "terror operatives" as its own description of who they were.
    The impression it gives
That it is settled fact that everyone killed in these strikes was a member of an armed group engaged in terror.
    The context
The only source for who the dead were is the IOF and Shin Bet. The article names no medic, relative or independent check, though the outlet's earlier reports cite Gaza medics on the same kind of strikes.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

“four members of Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group were killed”

    Why this matters
In its own voice, with no attribution in the sentence, the outlet states that the four people killed in Khan Younis on Sunday were members of armed groups.
    The impression it gives
That the outlet has established the identity and affiliation of the four dead.
    The context
The identification comes only from the army and Shin Bet, as the next sentence admits. Every other report of these strikes repeats the same army statement and nothing else.

    How we know

    Written straight

Israeli strikes in Gaza killed seven Palestinians earlier this week. The Israeli military and Shin Bet said all seven were members of Hamas and other armed groups; there was no independent confirmation.
