Ynet News (English), on West Bank, 26 October 2026

Ynet tells the siege of Hebron as an internal Israeli argument about whether an operation is producing results, and borrows the government's vocabulary for what is being done to the city's residents: the expulsion of Palestinian families becomes "the evacuation of Palestinian residents", their homes become "unauthorized structures", and the forced displacement becomes a "legal difficulty" of "keeping Palestinian residents away from their homes". It calls the two Palestinian gunmen "terrorists" in its own voice while never telling the reader Israeli forces shot them dead, and it never once says the West Bank is occupied. No Palestinian is heard anywhere in the piece, though other outlets reported hundreds expelled and the mayor calling Hebron a disaster zone.

What we found

  1. Labels people on one side's word

    Severe

“the two terrorists who carried out the deadly attack”

    What the words do
Ynet calls the two Palestinian men "terrorists" as a settled fact in its own voice; only the claim about their weapons is attributed to officials.
What a reader comes away believing
That the label is established reporting rather than the Israeli government's word, and that the men are still at large and being searched for.
    What is actually the case
Other outlets covering the same shooting call them Palestinian gunmen, and the Daily Mail reports that Israeli forces shot them dead on the day of the attack. The word gunmen appears nowhere in this article, and it never tells readers the two men were killed.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

Israeli officials say the two Palestinian gunmen, who were shot dead by Israeli forces after the checkpoint attack, carried automatic weapons and large quantities of ammunition.

  2. Uses the occupation's words

    Serious

“the evacuation of Palestinian residents and the demolition of unauthorized structures”

    What the words do
Ynet writes the forced removal of Hebron families as "the evacuation of Palestinian residents" and their homes as "unauthorized structures", in its own voice and with no attribution.
What a reader comes away believing
That residents were moved out of harm's way and that only illegal buildings were knocked down.
    What is actually the case
Middle East Eye reports that Israel has expelled hundreds of Palestinians from their homes in Hebron and that the city's mayor calls it a disaster zone; the word "evacuate" comes from Netanyahu's own order. The article never writes expelled or displaced.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

“the legal difficulties involved in keeping Palestinian residents away from their homes for extended periods”

    What the words do
Turns the expulsion of families from their houses into a procedural problem for the army, phrased as people being "kept away" rather than driven out.
What a reader comes away believing
That Palestinians are temporarily inconvenienced and that the only issue is the army's legal exposure.
    What is actually the case
Other coverage of the same operation records hundreds of people expelled from their homes and an Israeli rights group warning of collective punishment and acts that could constitute war crimes.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

Troops are searching for weapons, making arrests, expelling Palestinian residents from their homes and demolishing houses; Israeli rights group B'Tselem has called the operation collective punishment that could amount to war crimes.

  3. Hedges the documented record

    Serious

“a deadly shooting attack near the West Bank city”

    What the words do
Names the location as "the West Bank city" and the piece goes on to describe demolitions and expulsions without ever saying the territory is occupied.
What a reader comes away believing
That Hebron is simply a city where Israeli forces conduct lawful security work.
    What is actually the case
The ICJ's July 2024 advisory opinion found Israel's occupation of the West Bank unlawful; both other outlets reporting this same operation write "the occupied West Bank". The words occupied and occupation appear nowhere in this article.

    How we know

The operation is taking place in Hebron, in the occupied West Bank, where the International Court of Justice has found Israel's presence unlawful.

  4. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Serious

    What is missing

The article does not report that Netanyahu ordered a siege of Hebron and said of the area the gunmen came from "We will act to destroy this place", nor that B'Tselem called the plan collective punishment and acts that could constitute war crimes. A reader is left believing the political leadership's only stated reasons were weapons searches and deterrence.

  5. One side gets the space

    Minor

“creates a psychological impact among Palestinians”

    What the words do
Gives Israeli security officials' description of the effect on a city of a quarter of a million people, with no Palestinian voice anywhere in the article to answer it.
What a reader comes away believing
That the effect on Hebron's residents is a calibrated military instrument rather than something experienced and described by the people living it.
    What is actually the case
Middle East Eye quotes Hebron's mayor saying the city is a disaster zone after hundreds were expelled from their homes; no resident, official or rights group from Hebron is quoted in this piece.

  6. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Minor

    What is missing

The article never says that Israeli forces shot the two attackers dead on the day of the shooting, or that the shooting happened at a military checkpoint at the entrance to Hebron. Without this a reader takes the continuing weapons searches as a hunt for the men themselves and does not know the attack targeted a checkpoint rather than the city generally.

    What is missing

The article praises the earlier northern West Bank camp operations for cutting "terrorist activity" without saying the UN found those same operations forcibly displaced thousands of Palestinians. Without it a reader believes the model being applied to Hebron was a clean success.

Not just Iran: Netanyahu defies IDF chief over continuing Hebron operation

The military operation in Hebron, launched after killed two IDF soldiers, has become another point of contention between the military leadership and Israel's political leadership, just a day before Tuesday's election. While troops from the IDF's 98th Division continue intensive operations involving searches for weapons, arrests of suspects, , military officials believe that the limited operational results so far warrant reassessing whether the operation should continue in its current form.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir presented his position during a meeting with the political leadership, attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, arguing that the time had come to end the operation. Netanyahu and Katz, however, rejected that assessment and instructed the military to continue. Ultimately, the chief of staff's recommendation was not accepted, and the decision was made to keep the operation underway.

The IDF has pointed, among other concerns, to , particularly when the operation is not producing significant military gains. So far, troops have made arrests and located a limited number of weapons, but have not uncovered unusual weaponry or large weapons stockpiles.

The political leadership, however, presents a different assessment. Officials argue that were armed with automatic weapons and substantial quantities of ammunition, making it necessary for the IDF to continue searching for additional weapons in the area. They also maintain that prolonging the operation will strengthen deterrence. Security officials explain that the very presence of large IDF forces operating inside Hebron , particularly because the troops have entered a major Palestinian city rather than refugee camps, as they did during previous operations in Jenin, Nur Shams and Tulkarem.

The current disagreement recalls an IDF operation in the Qalandiya refugee camp in August. At the time, the military defined its objectives as targeting terrorist operatives and infrastructure. Katz also pushed for a large-scale operation and again raised the possibility of taking control of another refugee camp, similar to the operations carried out in Jenin, Tulkarem and Nur Shams.

IDF officials said the military had operational plans for every refugee camp but had not mobilized forces to carry them out because there was no operational necessity. There was also tension over contingency planning for a scenario known in the military as a "turning of the guns," involving a possible armed escalation in which Palestinian security forces turn their weapons against Israel. Katz presented the IDF's extensive and aggressive plan for such a scenario, although intelligence assessments at the time did not indicate that an escalation of that kind was imminent in the West Bank.

It is important to note that the prolonged military operations in refugee camps in the northern West Bank, which Katz was among those pushing for and which were conducted under Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth, led to a significant decline in terrorist activity in the area, according to Israeli security assessments.

However, the Qalandiya operation ended after just two days and, based on the information available so far, did not produce significant operational results. Now, in Hebron, the question is once again whether continuing the operation is likely to yield further results or whether it has already achieved its main objectives.

But the debate over the Hebron operation is unfolding against a broader and more complicated security backdrop. The IDF is currently also focused on preventing the next attack, particularly attacks carried out by lone assailants inspired by previous incidents. Security officials are concerned about copycat attacks that could develop following exposure to incitement on social media and military activity on the ground. Central Command is therefore concentrating its efforts on identifying threats early, thwarting potential attackers and preventing an escalation that could emerge from several directions.

The IDF stresses that such conditions require precise, targeted counterterrorism operations, accompanied by constant assessments of their operational value and their consequences on the ground. The concern is that an escalation could develop rapidly, making it necessary to consider not only existing threats but also the reactions military operations themselves could provoke.

Against this backdrop, the Hebron operation illustrates the tension between the political leadership's demand to continue military activity in pursuit of deterrence and additional weapons discoveries, and the IDF's position that the operational benefits must be weighed against the consequences of prolonging the operation for the local Palestinian population.
