Medics said ‌two people were killed and six others wounded in two separate airstrikes in Khan Younis, in the south of the enclave, while a third person was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the town of Al-Mussadar. Reuters names Israel as the killer in its headline and lead. In one sentence it puts the Palestinian death toll behind 'Palestinian authorities say' while stating the Israeli toll of 7 October as plain fact in its own voice. The article says nothing about who the three dead were, so the Israeli army's attributed 'militants' label is the only description they receive.

  1. Doubts one side's dead and not the other's

    Serious

    “Palestinian authorities say”

    Why this matters
Reuters puts the Palestinian death toll from Israel's assault behind "Palestinian authorities say".
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the figure of more than 74,000 dead as one side's claim, less firm than a counted fact.
    The context
Gaza's Ministry of Health has recorded 74,392 Palestinians killed by Israeli occupation forces. In the same sentence, Reuters states the Israeli toll of 7 October with no attribution at all.

    How we know

    • On the recordGaza's Ministry of Health recorded the Israeli occupation as having killed 74,392 Palestinians, a cumulative toll that NewsCord's reading of BBC coverage cites as of October 2026.newscord.org (opens in a new tab)
    • On the recordNewsCord's reading of five BBC Complaints Team responses found the BBC attaches verification caveats to Palestinian casualty figures while treating Israeli government denials as sufficient on their own, without caveat.newscord.org (opens in a new tab)

“Hamas-led fighters killed about 1,200 people in southern”

    Why this matters
Reuters gives the Israeli toll of 7 October as plain fact in its own voice, with no source named.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the Israeli dead as an established count and the Palestinian dead, a few words earlier, as a claim.
    The context
Both figures come from one side's authorities. Only the Palestinian figure carries an attribution. Israel's own military investigations attribute at least 13 of the deaths of 7 to 9 October to Israeli fire, yet the sentence assigns all 1,200 to Hamas-led fighters.

    How we know

    • On the recordIsrael's own military investigations and memorial records attribute at least 13 of the deaths on 7 to 9 October 2023 to Israeli fire.newscord.org (opens in a new tab)

    Written straight

Gaza's health ministry has recorded more than 74,000 Palestinians killed in Israel's assault on Gaza, launched after Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which Israeli authorities say about 1,200 people were killed.

  2. Leaves the army's label as the only word on the dead

    Minor

“targeting Palestinian militants, without giving further information”

    Why this matters
Reuters attributes the "militants" claim to the Israeli military and notes that no details were given. But the article says nothing else about who the three dead were.
    The impression it gives
Without names, ages or any description from medics or families, a reader is left with the army's word "militants" as the only account of who was killed.
    The context
The medics' account gives only numbers. The article does not say whether the dead were civilians or name them, so the army's unverified label fills the gap.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“six others wounded in two separate airstrikes”
    • Checked against the whole articleIt never uses the words “civilian”.
