Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Says She Is Freezing Her Eggs Ahead of 2028 Presidential Run

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 36-year-old New York Democrat, said she is freezing her eggs and shared the process in a series of Instagram Stories and videos posted on Saturday.

On ABC News’ “This Week” the next morning, Ocasio-Cortez said she had not “ruled out the possibility” of running for president.

She also said she planned to take her medication injections in a dressing room before a scheduled ABC interview, and she later told viewers, “That wasn’t so bad!”

Ocasio-Cortez said her insurance does not cover egg freezing, telling Shore News Network, “My insurance does not cover one penny for this,” and “It is 100% out of pocket… it covers nothing.”

She said she estimated the procedure would cost about $8,000, and she said it would now cost her $1,200 per year to store her frozen eggs.

In a separate account, Newsweek said she expects the procedure to cost about $8,000 to $9,000 and said she is paying “100 percent out of pocket.”

Fox News reported that Ocasio-Cortez said she was aware there could be a “political tax” associated with disclosing the decision, and she argued that the Trump administration has made pregnancy more dangerous than “probably at any point in the last 30-plus years.”

Ocasio-Cortez linked her public disclosure to reproductive politics, telling ABC News’ “This Week” that “this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy.”

In the same appearance, she said she wanted to normalize conversations about fertility treatment, and she also said she was “focused on winning the mid-terms, I’m running for Congress right now.”

The Washington Post described her video announcement as a public disclosure of a private matter, saying she is freezing her eggs.

Meanwhile, Fox News reported that Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet criticized the move on social media, writing on X that “AOC turns 37 in a few weeks so if she got pregnant tomorrow it would already be a geriatric pregnancy.”
