GM Rolls Out 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 Split-Screen CarPlay, Android Auto

CarPlay Returns, Split-Screen
General Motors is rolling out a redesigned in-vehicle software experience for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 that keeps Apple CarPlay and Android Auto visible alongside native GM controls.

The Verge describes the change as “picture-in-picture phone projection,” with CarPlay or Android Auto shown in a large contextual card rather than taking over the entire display.
GM’s approach is designed to let drivers open phone projection and then return to GM’s split-screen home view while keeping access to functions such as trailering information and off-road settings.
Engadget similarly frames the update as a splitscreen solution that integrates CarPlay and Android Auto so drivers can access phone functions while still seeing vehicle gauges.
GM says the new interface is designed to debut on new 2027 trucks later in 2026, with existing owners keeping the previous-generation interface, according to The Verge and Engadget.
Design Goal: Less Tapping
GM is positioning the redesigned interface as a way to reduce the amount of dangerous tapping and swiping needed to reach frequently used controls.
In a CNBC Q&A, Executive Director of Human Interface Design Sebastian Bauer said, “Our job is to make sure that we reduce cognitive load, and we give people the information that they need to see at the moment when they see it.”
CNBC also says the system proactively surfaces relevant controls such as opening or closing a garage door and answering a call without requiring drivers to navigate several screens or menus.
The Verge adds that GM’s larger screens are “designed to enhance but not overwhelm the driving experience,” and it cites Colin McCormick’s view that larger tap zones can make the system easier to operate.
GM’s new UI is also tied to Super Cruise updates, with CNBC saying the visual upgrade will show objects such as other vehicles or pedestrians on the driver cluster screen.
Trailering, Screens, and Rollout
GM’s redesigned truck interface is built around split-view access to trailering data, camera views, vehicle controls, and smartphone integration, with a redesigned home screen that can keep a large interactive map visible.

Work Truck Online says the interface can adapt once a trailer is connected, with dedicated trailering information appearing in the instrument cluster and a trailering card on the center screen providing additional towing information.
For drivers who tow, GM says the system can also perform trailer light checks from a connected phone, including brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and running lights.
The Autopian reports that the 2027 Silverado and Sierra add a passenger-side screen measuring 11.5 inches across the diagonal, while all new trucks get a 12.2-inch instrument cluster display and a 16.3-inch touchscreen as standard equipment.
GM’s software rollout is described as starting with its highest-volume pickups, with The Verge saying the interface is a model-year feature rather than a general software update for current trucks.
