Exein’s $270m bet

Italian cybersecurity startup Exein, based in Rome, raised $270 million in a new funding round led by Headline and reached a $1.7 billion valuation as it builds a security layer for robots, drones, and autonomous physical AI vehicles.

The company’s concept, as described by CEO Gianni Cuozzo, is that every device should be able to defend itself “regardless of whether it is connected to a secure network or not.”

Exein says its latest product, Photon, provides protection while a device is operating and blocks attacks at the kernel level, working directly with hardware manufacturers and chip suppliers during development.

Exein also links its growth to the spread of physical artificial intelligence, describing systems where algorithms interact with the real world and control robots, drones, cars, and other devices.

The funding is expected to accelerate expansion in the United States and the Asia-Pacific region, which the company says accounts for about half of its revenue.

Machine-speed attacks

Exein’s defensive approach is designed to operate directly on the device rather than relying on cloud-based analytics, with Photon positioned at the kernel level where code executes.

Cuozzo said the threat tempo has changed, telling the outlet that “Attacks now happen at machine speed, so defense has to as well,” and adding that “Physical AI is the natural next step for Exein: we are building machine-time security for machine-time attacks.”

The company also reported that, according to its internal telemetry, it detects approximately 5,000 new, non-repetitive attacks across its network each week, a figure it described as a fivefold increase from one year ago.

To address that shift, Exein is developing what it describes as an agentic security architecture expected to be introduced by the end of 2026, alongside a proprietary foundation model trained on machine telemetry.

The foundation model is planned for initial deployment in the first quarter of 2027, with Exein saying it will learn from data collected from machines and telemetry to establish a baseline of normal behavior.

Regulation and rollout

Exein’s funding round drew participation from institutional backers including Sofina, Goldman Sachs, the European Investment Bank Group, KfW Capital, and T.Capital, and it was led by Headline with an expanded revolving credit facility led by J.P. Morgan.

The European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act could generate additional demand for its solutions.

The company’s valuation and growth trajectory were highlighted across outlets, including a claim that its valuation increased approximately 30-fold compared with its Series B round and that it is growing by 400% year over year.

In addition to product development, Exein said it plans to use part of the financing to acquire other developers and expand its product portfolio, while also growing the team and accelerating operations in the United States and the Asia-Pacific region.

The European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act is also framed as a potential demand driver, with reporting requirements already in effect and the law set to come fully into force in December 2027.

Exein’s stated rationale is that the law requires manufacturers to protect digital products from cyber threats, and the company expects that requirement to create new opportunities as the number of connected and autonomous devices continues to grow rapidly.
