Pilot zones in southern Lebanon
Al Jazeera reported on what it called Lebanon’s “pilot zones” in southern Lebanon, where the US and Israel say they want foreign observers to verify that Hezbollah is not operating.

The US State Department spokesperson told Asharq that the “pilot zones” process remained “the only viable path towards achieving long-term peace and security for Lebanon and Israel”.
The same US spokesperson said Washington was looking forward to the Lebanese army completing risk-removal operations in the initial pilot zones and expanding the process once completion was verified.
Arab News described the “model zones” initiative as one in which the Lebanese army would assume control of certain areas in southern Lebanon that Israeli forces entered during the latest war with Hezbollah.

US push meets battlefield friction
Arab News said the US official described Hezbollah as the “main obstacle” to Lebanon’s economic recovery and the “greatest threat” to its security and stability, and held the group fully responsible for Israel’s continued presence on Lebanese territory.
In response to the US framing, i24NEWS quoted a US State Department spokesperson saying, “The pilot-zone process remains the only viable path toward long-term peace and security for Lebanon and Israel.”
i24NEWS added that the spokesperson said the United States expected the Lebanese Armed Forces to complete the land clearing operations in the initial pilot zones and expand the process once clearance was verified.
Arab News reported that Israel continued its attacks on southern Lebanon on Saturday, killing nine people and injuring 11 others, with the attacks described as the deadliest since the US-brokered framework agreement was signed several weeks ago.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam accused Israel of undermining efforts to stabilise the south, and Arab News said Lebanon’s National News Agency reported Israel struck a house in Ansar, killing seven people and injuring three others.
Guarantees, verification, and stakes
Ash-Sharq al-Awsat said countries proposed to participate in any alternative international mission to UNIFIL, or in verification mechanisms in the model areas, were seeking security guarantees from both Israel and Hezbollah.

Ash-Sharq al-Awsat also reported that the proposed countries required a halt to Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory within their areas of operation, while saying that “under the current attacks there is no progress on any of the files on the table”.
Sky News Arabia quoted a US State Department spokesperson saying the experimental zones represent the only practical path to long-term peace and security for Lebanon and Israel, while also linking trilateral support to US interest in regional stability.
Sky News Arabia added that political analyst Ali Sbaiti said Hezbollah does not want to surrender its weapons and that the Lebanese authorities do not want to disarm them by force, leaving weapons within the party’s environment alongside continued Israeli presence.
