Al Jazeera reported that the attacks were launched from Iranian territory and that the Kurdistan Region of Iraq’s security agency said there were no reports of casualties.

The attack was described by the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service as a targeting of "the private office of the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the residence of the Security Directorate" in the region.

Barzani condemns escalation

Masrour Barzani condemned the attack on X as “illegitimate and unacceptable,” and said it was “a dangerous step and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region,” according to Al Jazeera.

ANF reported that Barzani described the targeting as “irresponsible, reckless and unacceptable,” saying it constituted “a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.”

ANF said the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Unit determined the attack was carried out using Iranian drones and set the timing as "at 12:28 a.m. on August 17" with two Hadid-110 drones launched from the Iranian border toward Pirmam.

CNN Arabic similarly said the Counterterrorism Service stated that two drones were launched from Iran and targeted the Prime Minister’s Office of the Kurdistan Region, adding that there were no reported injuries from the attack.

Regional security stakes

The incident was framed by multiple outlets as part of a broader pattern of cross-border drone attacks, with Al Jazeera noting that Iran and Iran-aligned armed groups have repeatedly accused Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region of harbouring Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.

Since February 28, when the United States and Israel launched their offensive against Iran, the Iraqi Kurdistan region has suffered more than 1,000 attacks

El ConfidencialEl Confidencial

El Confidencial said Tehran had issued no reaction and that the Kurdistan Anti-Terrorism Service stated "two explosive drones, model ‘Hadid-110’, were fired from Iran" at Barzani’s headquarters and the residence of the head of the Regional Security Service in Pirmam.

El Confidencial also tied the attack to a wider security toll, saying that since February 28, when the United States and Israel launched their offensive against Iran, the Iraqi Kurdistan region has suffered more than 1,000 attacks attributed to Iran and Tehran-aligned Iraqi militias, with a toll of 32 dead, according to Kurdish outlet Rudaw.

In parallel, La Vanguardia reported that the regional government’s security agency said the attack was launched from Iranian territory and did not cause casualties, while Kurdistan’s anti-terrorist office condemned it as an “unacceptable aggression.”
