Gas find in Fars
Iran said it discovered more than 200 billion cubic metres of natural gas in the southern Fars province, with more than 160 billion cubic metres potentially recoverable, as Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad told state television.

France 24 reported that the find came as Iran’s energy sector faces disruption after months of US-Israeli strikes on gas facilities, oil depots and transport routes.
The Times of India put the discovery at more than 7.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in Fars, saying around 5.7 tcf is recoverable and that the recoverable reserves are equivalent to around 15 years of production from one phase of South Pars, which Iran shares with Qatar.
WION also cited Mohsen Paknejad’s figures, saying the discovery in Fars totals 7.5 trillion cubic feet and that around 5.7 trillion cubic feet could be extracted based on an estimated recovery rate of 72%.
Reuters added that any new production from the site would likely be years away, citing Bloomberg.
Sanctions and rhetoric
On Aug 24, Reuters said the U.S. announced an expansion of secondary sanctions it hopes will "sever every economic lifeline" sustaining Iran, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent describing the effort as an "economic D-Day".
Reuters quoted Bessent at a press conference saying, "We are launching an economic onslaught against Iran’s financial connections around the globe."
The Times of India described how tensions between the U.S. and Iran intensified over the Strait of Hormuz, including a remark by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social that the waterway was “new US territory”.
The Times of India also said Iran rejected the US territorial claims and maintained that the waterway will remain closed unless Washington changes its position, while Iran’s Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei criticised Trump’s remarks.
In a post on X on August 22, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said, “Such secondary sanctions find no foundation in international law,” according to The Times of India.
Energy pressure and timelines
France 24 said Iran’s energy sector has taken a hit since joint US-Israeli strikes on gas production facilities or oil depots, as well as transport routes, began after the Middle East war launched in late February.

The Times of India reported that Iran lost around a quarter of its daily gas production capacity after attacks on energy infrastructure began in late February, and that the Iranian government warned of possible gas shortages this winter while urging citizens to reduce consumption.
Reuters said the discovery does not translate into immediate output, noting that any new production from the site would likely be years away, as Bloomberg assessed.
Crude Oil Prices Today said repairs at the South Pars gas field continue, with 70% of operations now restored, and that restoring 100% of operations would take at least three years, citing a chief executive speaking to SHANA news agency.
In the same context of war-hit infrastructure and sanctions pressure, Reuters reported that a projectile struck a tanker west of the Saudi port city of Yanbu in the Red Sea on Monday, causing a fire on the main deck, according to shipping monitors from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations.
