Hostage Doctor in Gaza
Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been held by Israel since his arrest on December 27, 2024, and Al Jazeera says “serious concerns are mounting” over his life and health.

Al Jazeera reports that Abu Safiya was detained after Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital, which he led through an 85-day siege, and that he has been held without charge under Israel’s unlawful combatant law.
Al Jazeera also says Abu Safia has been assaulted while in an Israeli detention facility and has sustained injuries to his eye, head and chest, while his ongoing detention and lack of medical care have made his health condition a “source of extreme alarm that demands urgent action not postponed statements.”
In the Truthout account, Amnesty International has called for Abu Safiya’s immediate release, while Physicians for Human Rights Israel has warned that his life is in imminent danger after his arrest on December 27, 2024.
Calls to Save Him
Gaza’s health ministry chief Dr. Munir al-Barsh urged urgent action to “save” Dr Abu Safia before it is “too late,” saying reports that Abu Safia was assaulted in detention and injured in his eye, head and chest require immediate intervention.
Al-Barsh held the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for Abu Safiya’s life and safety and demanded “an urgent, independent and comprehensive medical examination for him, ensuring he receives the necessary treatment,” according to Al Jazeera.
In the Saba report, al-Barsh warned that the “absence of an independent medical examination and appropriate care” makes Abu Safiya’s health condition “a matter of grave concern that necessitates urgent action, not delayed statements.”
Saba also quotes al-Barsh saying, “We don't want the world to wake up to this news and then start issuing statements of regret after it's too late to save him.”
Wider Health System Fallout
Al Jazeera links the appeal for Abu Safiya to a broader deterioration in Gaza’s health sector, reporting that Israel has not adhered to ceasefire terms and that the Israeli-controlled “yellow” zones now cover more than 70 percent of the Strip.

The article reports that Nasser Hospital said “three to four patients” were dying daily due to the shortage of medicines and medical supplies, and that Gaza’s Health Ministry said hospitals received two people who had died of their wounds and six injured in the past 24 hours.
Al Jazeera frames the stakes by stating that Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians since October 2023, while also noting that the latest casualties increased the death toll since last October’s “ceasefire” to 1,257 and 4,131 wounded.
