Shortened UN Trip
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shortened his upcoming New York visit to hours after security officials advised him to shorten his stay in the United States, Channel 13 reported, citing security warnings presented to him regarding the trip. Channel 13 said Netanyahu was scheduled to leave Israel on Wednesday evening, arrive in New York on Thursday morning, address the 81st UN General Assembly, and return to Israel on Thursday evening without staying in New York for even one night. Channel 13 also said senior security officials held multiple meetings in the past two days to discuss the matter, including meetings in which Netanyahu participated, where an intelligence assessment including security warnings was reviewed.
Netanyahu was expected to leave Israel late Wednesday, arrive in New York early Thursday, address the 81st UN General Assembly, and return to Israel later that day without staying overnight. Netanyahu’s itinerary did not include a meeting with US President Donald Trump, and a planned stop in the state of Texas to meet businessman Elon Musk was canceled.
Mamdani and ICC
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani attacked Netanyahu ahead of the UN visit, calling him “the architect of horrific genocide against Palestinians,” and Mamdani said Netanyahu is “the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant.”
Netanyahu responded to Mamdani by saying, “Shame on you, Mr. Mamdani. Shame on you for supporting the Hamas terrorist monsters who butchered our people,” and Netanyahu added, “Shame on you for inciting riots against New York’s Jews.”
Mamdani also told CNN that his stance toward Netanyahu rests on the International Criminal Court arrest warrant, questioning why Netanyahu is exempt from accountability under international law “as long as the court has found him to have committed violations.”
The ICC issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Netanyahu and former Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity due to the genocide in the Gaza Strip.
Mamdani urged US federal authorities to enforce the ICC arrest warrant while acknowledging that New York City authorities lack the legal power to carry it out.
Protests and UN Reception
Israeli media reports said Netanyahu’s visit was expected to face protests in New York because of Israel’s genocide in the Gaza Strip and violations in the occupied West Bank, and Anadolu Ajansı said the expectations included protests in New York.
Officials expected some diplomats could walk out during Netanyahu's address while others may stage protests inside the chamber, including by displaying signs accusing Israel of genocide.
Israel rejects accusations that its actions in Gaza constitute genocide, and it reported that an Israeli official said images involving National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and incidents of Jewish extremist violence in the West Bank further damaged Israel’s standing internationally.
New York City was preparing for synchronized protests at the UN complex, Bryant Park, and Union Square, and a march from Bryant Park to the United Nations was expected.
A banner spotted at Grand Central Station in Manhattan read, “Manhattan rejects Zionists and war criminals. Netanyahu is not welcome in New York.”
