Evacuation Order Amid U.S. Pressure
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the evacuation of some “illegal” settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank, with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich telling AFP, "To my knowledge, Netanyahu has given the instruction to evacuate" certain settlements.
Ahram Online reported that the outposts were built without official Israeli government authorization and often consisted of a few prefabricated homes, and it said Smotrich added that he did not approve of the measure.
Al-Bawāba News said the move came amid increasing American pressure on Israel to act against rising attacks by settlers on Palestinians, and it reported that Reuters quoted two sources saying the decision targets outposts erected without official government approval.
Ahram Online also placed the order in a wider context of accelerated settlement expansion under Netanyahu’s government, noting that at the end of August Netanyahu pledged to continue establishing settlements in the West Bank.
The same Ahram Online report said U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee visited the West Bank on Saturday and delivered a message that "crime is crime, terror is terror," while adding that when people do it they should expect “severe consequences.”
Smotrich’s Objection and Competing Numbers
Smotrich confirmed Netanyahu’s directives to dismantle outposts in specified areas but expressed objection, and Al-Bawāba News said he confirmed the evacuation while saying he did not approve of the step. Al-Jazirah Net reported that the instructions target around 100 outposts, while Yedioth Ahronoth said it concerns outposts in Area B, and it added that there was no official cover because no execution date was set and no list of sites was published. Al-Jazirah Net also quoted Smotrich saying, 'To my knowledge, Netanyahu issued orders to evacuate some sites,' and it said he noted the matter concerns 'places established in Areas A and B.'
Ahram Online described the outposts as illegal under Israeli law and said all Israeli settlements in the West Bank are considered illegal under international law, while it reported that Smotrich said the evacuation involved outposts built in areas under the control of the Palestinian Authority and without official authorization. Al-Jazirah Net further said Peace Now estimated there are at least 340 outposts in the West Bank alongside 146 settlements officially recognized by Israeli authorities, and it described how outposts can begin as tents or trailers before roads, services, and permanent buildings are added.

Al-Jazirah Net warned that even if outposts are removed, the impact depends on where the sites are located and what happens to them afterward, because it said the Civil Administration periodically dismantles some sites but “all are rebuilt and continue to expand.” It also said Peace Now cited Israeli media reports of Netanyahu’s call to evacuate Area B outposts and noted their continued spread afterwards, and it described how a small location can isolate a family from its surroundings in Qusra. In parallel, Al-Quds al-Arabi reported that the Palestinian Committee for the Resistance of the Wall and Settlements said Israel uses evacuation of outposts to manage international pressure without reflecting a real shift in settlement expansion policy, and it said the committee argued that "both paths do not represent a real shift in Israeli policy toward settlements."
Al-Quds al-Arabi also reported that Yedioth Ahronoth revealed American pressure on Israel to evacuate outposts established in areas classified as “B,” and it said the newspaper claimed Netanyahu issued directives to security agencies to move to evacuate unauthorised outposts located in area “B.” Ahram Online tied the order to the broader West Bank violence surge since the outbreak of Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023, and it said more than 500,000 Israelis live in settlements in the occupied West Bank alongside some three million Palestinians.
