Impeachment talk before Nov. 3

Democratic U.S. Senate nominee N'Kiyla Jasmine Thomas promised that, if elected, she will work to “impeach, remove and convict” Donald Trump within her “first 100 days.”

Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen introduced 26 articles of impeachment against Trump in September, and Cohen said, “Trump is clearly the most impeachable President our country has ever endured.”

House Democrats debated whether impeachment should be a central midterm issue, and a September House vote on an impeachment resolution was tabled 232-147.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats had not “ruled anything in” or “ruled anything out,” while Rep. Marilyn Strickland said a Democratic majority would hold Trump and his administration accountable, “including keeping impeachment on the table.”

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, with all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats on the ballot.

Johnson pledges seating by law

House Speaker Mike Johnson insisted he will act “by the book” when swearing in new members after the midterms, and he called concerns over a peaceful transfer of power “absurd.” Johnson told reporters that “The Constitution says when a state certifies the election of members of Congress then they’re administered the oath,” and he said he would do it on January 3. Democracy Docket warned that if Democrats retake the House narrowly, a Republican member could challenge the seating of some Democrats and the clerk could order challenged members to step aside.

Johnson also said, “I’m sure that people will be upset with the election outcome on the Democrat side when we beat them on Election Day,” and he added that he would be “the speaker of the house administering the oath.” The dispute over seating would hinge on whether a majority of the current GOP-controlled House ratified the clerk’s actions and refused to seat challenged members.

Polls, early voting, and stakes

NPR reported that a new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll found Democrats retain significant midterm electoral advantages, but the poll also showed warning signs for how many gains could be limited.

“The poll of 1,289 registered voters was conducted Oct. 19-20.”
NPR

NPR said the poll found that just 38% of registered voters approved of the job President Trump is doing, with 61% disapproving, and likely voters gave him a 40% to 59% rating.

NPR also reported that the poll of 1,289 registered voters was conducted Oct. 19-20, with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percentage points for registered voters.

CNN Arabic said more than 31 million voters had already cast ballots in early voting, and it described the midterms as potentially ending Republican dominance and granting Democrats power to rein in President Donald Trump.

The stakes in the election are tied to control of Congress, with the House and Senate races set to determine whether Democrats can pursue investigations and oversight, and whether impeachment efforts can move forward.
