Key Takeaways

  • Notion launched a developer platform turning its workspace into a central hub for AI agents.
  • It enables connecting external agents, data sources, and building automated multi-step workflows.
  • Public beta of Custom Agents launched, enabling background automation and enterprise-scale AI workflows.

Notion adds Custom Agents

Notion announced the public beta availability of its Custom Agents, AI assistants integrated directly into the workspace that run automatically in the background based on a workflow trigger or schedule.

Notion, the productivity software company best known for its collaborative note-taking and project management app, is making a significant strategic pivot

The company says the agents execute whether a user is connected or not, and they can interact with Slack, the calendar, and other connected tools using knowledge already present in the company’s ecosystem.

Notion also frames the feature around three use cases: Q&A agents that answer recurring questions from an existing knowledge base, routing agents that capture incoming tasks and assign them automatically 24h/24, and reporting agents that collect team updates and produce recurring reports on a defined calendar.

Notion says it is building for transparency by recording each execution with a full history of what triggered the action and which modifications were made, and it says permissions are based on those of existing Notion pages with changes remaining reversible through the platform’s collaborative layer.

In its pricing model, Notion says Custom Agents are not included in the standard subscription and instead use a credits system, with agents free during the next two months of public beta and requiring credits starting 4 mai.

Developer platform and Workers

At a livestreamed product announcement, Notion unveiled a developer platform that lets developers and teams build intelligent multi-step workflows, connect AI agents to external data and databases, and execute custom code in a secure cloud environment.

Notion said the platform extends beyond its Custom Agents launched in February, which it described as handling repetitive tasks like answering frequently asked questions and compiling project updates, while earlier versions lacked the ability to connect to external data or execute custom programming logic.

Evan Chao, co-founder and CEO of Notion, highlighted the Workers feature as a cloud environment where clients can run code in an isolated and secure environment, enabling data synchronization with Notion, creation of custom tools, and automatic execution of tasks via Webhook notifications.

The platform also adds support for synchronizing external databases via APIs, with Notion able to pull data from services such as Salesforce, Zendesk, and Postgres databases into Notion.

At launch, the external-agent support list includes Anthropic Claude Code, Cursor, OpenAI Codex, and Decagon, and Notion said it is providing an External Agent API so organizations can connect internally developed AI agents to the Notion platform.

Credits, governance, and stakes

As Notion expands its agent tooling, InfoWorld says the Developer Platform adds custom code execution, database sync, external agent support, and workflow triggers, and it frames the outcome as dependent on governance and execution for enterprise adoption.

Notion introduced a new developer platform during a livestreamed product announcement on Wednesday, enhancing its custom AI agents and enabling teams to build automated multistep workflows that connect with external databases

InfoWorld quotes Tulika Sheel, senior vice president at Kadence International, saying “Notion Workers sit somewhere between low-code automation and lightweight serverless infrastructure,” and it contrasts the approach with Zapier or Airtable.

InfoWorld also reports that Workers are free during the beta period but will run on Notion credits starting August 11, and it says developers will use a Notion CLI to sign into workspaces and deploy Workers.

In parallel, Presse-citron describes Notion’s stance on cost transparency by saying Notion AI does not use client data to train its models and that no retention is performed for users Enterprise, while administrators can disable an agent at any time.

For a different view of what changes when agents route around tools, SaaStr’s author describes a case where Salesforce spend rose to about $22,000 a year from $12,000, while Notion usage stopped because “our AI agents don’t care,” even though “Notion AI is impressive.”
