Drone Downed Near Mecca
Saudi Arabia’s coalition supporting legitimacy in Yemen said the Royal Saudi Air Defense Force intercepted and destroyed an armed unmanned aircraft launched by the Houthis on Tuesday evening before it entered restricted airspace over Mecca.

Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki al-Maliki said the interception occurred south of the holy capital and described the attempt as a "hostile and terrorist attempt".
The BBC reported that Turki al-Maliki said the targeting of Mecca was a "disgraceful act" and that Saudi authorities issued brief security alerts for incoming projectiles in Mecca and Jeddah.B
The Houthis denied targeting Mecca and military spokesman Yahya Sarea said, "There is no threat whatsoever from Yemen to the holy sites."
Condemnations and Denials
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemned what it described as "heinous attacks" carried out by the Houthis on Mecca and the Medina region, while the Houthis rejected the Saudi narrative.
On X, Hizam al-Assad, a member of the political bureau of Ansar Allah, wrote, "Claims of targeting Mecca are a discredited lie that has worn out and no longer deceives anyone."
The BBC reported that Yahya Sarea said the Houthis launched drones and missiles in retaliation for more than 450 Saudi air strikes on their territory over the past week.B
In response to the drone incident, Turki al-Maliki vowed that the coalition would not hesitate to take necessary and deterrent measures, saying the safety of the Two Holy Mosques and the guests of الرحمن is a red line.
Regional Stakes and Fallout
The drone episode unfolded as the Houthis expanded influence on Yemen’s Red Sea coast and arrived at the strategic Bab al-Mandab strait, with the BBC noting last week’s capture of Mokha and Perim Island.
