As it stands, there’s still no option to filter out kids and family content from your video recommendations like you can with Spotify, which leaves a gap for YouTube to fill.

TechRadar frames the toggle as part of a broader YouTube comparison, while TechCrunch sticks to Spotify and parents’ pain points.

New Spotify toggle

Spotify is rolling out a new setting that lets users exclude children’s and family music from their taste profile, which Spotify says forms the basis for personalized features like “Your Weekly Mix,” Daily Mixes, and the home page.

Spotify is now offering a solution—with a new toggle that specifically excludes children’s and family music from your personal taste profile.

The toggle is labeled “Kids & Family Music” in Spotify’s app path described by Basic Tutorials, where users can turn off the “Kids & Family Music” toggle under Settings and privacy > Content and display.

Spotify says the change applies retroactively, so children’s songs already streamed will no longer skew year-in-review stats, and it may take up to 48 hours after activation for the change to take effect in recommendations.

RouteNote similarly describes the setting as excluding kids and family music from recommendations and Wrapped, while also stating it is rolling out globally on mobile to both Free and Premium users.

TechRadar adds that the feature is rolling out to Free and Premium users globally today (September 15), and it can be found in Settings under the ‘Content and display’ tab.T

What changes, what stays

When the toggle is disabled, Spotify says songs in question can still be searched for, played, and added to playlists as usual, but they won’t influence recommendations or the Spotify Wrapped year-end recap.

Basic Tutorials also notes that streams from excluded playlists or songs will no longer count toward Top Artists or Top Songs, while the total playback time will still be included in overall statistics.

Engadget describes the same mechanism through the new toggle labeled “Include kids and family music in taste profile,” which will change what shows up in Discovery Weekly, Daily Mix or Wrapped.

Billboard frames the impact as kids’ and family music being excluded from personalized recommendations such as Discover Weekly and Daily Mix, and also excluded from listening insights including a listener’s year-end Spotify Wrapped recap.

Spotify’s own guidance in PCMag UK says the toggle works retroactively and that it could take up to two days for changes to appear, while also stating it affects all signed-in devices such as a smart speaker or a TV app.

Why it matters for families

The new toggle is positioned as a solution for parents sharing a Spotify account with children, where kids’ music can dominate Wrapped and weekly mixes, and Spotify’s taste profile can end up reflecting children’s listening rather than the adult’s preferences.

Keep your recommendations yours.

VarietyVariety

Variety quotes Spotify’s promotional messaging that “Keep your recommendations yours,” and it says the company is telling subscribers that parents don’t always share the same taste as their young children.

USA Today describes how the setting excludes kids and family music from a user’s Spotify Wrapped, Daily Mix and Discover Weekly, while still allowing users to listen to and build playlists with kids music.

PCMag UK adds that the tool is designed for parents to turn it on once and know that across their devices, their kids playing music won’t affect playlists like Discover Weekly or personalized Mixes, as well as end-of-year roundups like Spotify Wrapped.

Spotify’s feature is also described as working alongside Managed Accounts, with USA Today stating the toggle works in tandem with Spotify's Managed Accounts and that Managed Accounts are intended for Spotify users between 7 and 14 years old.
