Netanyahu on Mount Hermon
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu entered the occupied area of Mount Hermon in Syria on Wednesday, accompanied by Defense Minister Yoav Galant, in a move observers linked to his campaign for Knesset elections scheduled for October 27.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Netanyahu’s entry into Syrian territory constitutes a “flagrant violation” of Syria’s sovereignty and “a serious threat to regional security,” and it urged the international community to compel Israel to comply with international legitimacy resolutions, including the 1974 ceasefire agreement.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said Netanyahu’s “illegal entry” and tour of Mount Hermon was a “provocative step and a blatant violation of Syria’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity and international law.”
In a video filmed at the summit, Netanyahu said, “On the eve of the Jewish New Year, we stand here at the summit of Mount Hermon; Damascus is here, Lebanon is there, and the Golan Heights are there.”
Damascus, Katz, and UN
France 24 reported that Netanyahu visited Israeli troops in an occupied stretch of Syria on Wednesday with Defence Minister Israel Katz, and it quoted Netanyahu saying, “We will not allow any terrorist army to establish itself on our border.”
Damascus condemned the trip as inflammatory, with the Syrian foreign ministry saying it was a “provocative move and a blatant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and of international law.”

Katz, in a video message filmed atop Mount Hermon, told Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa that “we are here on Mount Hermon, we are in the security zone, and we are not moving from here,” while also threatening Iran by saying, “Iran is in the background; we struck it twice, and when necessary we will strike it a third time.”
In a separate protest outside the Security Council headquarters, Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ibrahim Alabi, said, “sovereignty is not selective, and the integrity of lands is not negotiable; it is a pillar indispensable to the international order.”
Regional escalation and stakes
Al-Jazeera Net reported that regions in southern Syria have seen near-daily Israeli incursions and attacks, particularly in the provinces of Quneitra and Daraa, including raids, searches, arrests, and the establishment of military checkpoints.

The same report said Israel has occupied most of the Golan Heights since 1967 and, after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8, 2024, it announced the collapse of the 1974 disengagement agreement, occupying the quasi-Syrian border area and other sites, including the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.
Middle East Online framed the stakes around Israel’s vow to hold ground, quoting Netanyahu as saying, “We will not allow any terrorist army to establish itself on our border,” while also linking the visit to his warning that Iran’s government was close to collapse.
Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ibrahim Alabi, warned that undermining Syria’s sovereignty and the integrity of its territory poses a threat to the framework that preserves peace and international order, and he said the protest emphasized “full respect for international law, the UN Charter, UN Security Council resolutions, and the lines and arrangements in force under the 1974 agreement.”
