Cease-fire Deal Announced

The United States and Iran reached an agreement to end the war and open the Strait of Hormuz, with President Donald Trump saying, "The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!"

Trump also said he fully authorized "the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade," while Iran’s deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed the agreement on state television and said Iran would not start implementing it until it was signed on Friday.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the official signing ceremony would be on June 19 in Switzerland, and the deal was described as declaring "the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon."

The New York Times reported that the cease-fire agreement would halt fighting for 60 days and pave the way for further talks, while leaving nuclear issues for another day.

Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters hailed the "glorious victory" of the Islamic Republic’s armed forces and resistance front over more than 100 days of war, framing the outcome as defeat and surrender for "wretched American and Zionist enemies."

Mediators, Threats, and Timing

Iran and the United States planned to formally sign the agreement on Friday in Geneva, according to Kazem Gharibabadi, while Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would reopen once the memorandum of understanding was signed.

The New York Times reported that a 60-day cease-fire was part of the deal, but that "the thorniest issues — including the fate of Iran’s nuclear program" were pushed to further negotiations.

NPR reported that Trump condemned an Israeli strike in Beirut’s southern suburbs and warned, "This morning's attack on Beirut should not have happened," adding, "Let's not blow it!"

NPR also quoted Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf condemning the strike as showing "America either lacks the will to fulfill its commitments or the ability to do so."

CNN said Qatari mediators left Tehran after 17 hours of intensive negotiations, and it described the next steps as a signing ceremony scheduled for Friday in Switzerland and 60 more days of negotiation after the memorandum of understanding takes effect.

What’s at Stake Next

The deal’s immediate operational impact centered on the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. naval blockade, with Trump writing that he authorized "the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz" and the "immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade."

The New York Times said the agreement called for an immediate end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, while also noting that sanctions relief for Tehran and the fate of Iran’s nuclear program remained unresolved.

CNN reported that Gharibabadi said the 60-day negotiations would hinge on the U.S. meeting three commitments, including "lifting and ending the naval blockade" and "releasing Iran’s frozen funds," and that entry into the negotiations was conditional on U.S. implementation.

AP described the agreement as a framework for further negotiations while warning that key issues like Iran’s nuclear program were expected to be addressed later, and it said the timeline could be extended if the sides fail to reach a resolution within 60 days.

Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters linked the outcome to the "divine and steel-like will" of the Iranian nation as an "unbreakable barrier" against aggression, while also stating the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States had been finalized and would be officially signed on Friday in Switzerland.
