Trump names Iran targets

President Donald Trump said the United States has knocked out much of Iran's military and nuclear program but still has "one or two" targets to take care of in "10 minutes," referring to a suspected underground nuclear complex under the Iranian mountain Kolang, also known as "Pickaxe Mountain." Trump told reporters at his Florida residence that "You probably could look at Pickaxe Mountain, and you have to take care of that," while the Iranian government denied that work on a nuclear program is taking place there.

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned the U.S. and Israel against launching a new offensive and threatened an "immediate, impactful and geographically unrestricted response," according to a statement. Iran's supreme leader also ordered commanders to update Iran's target list to include "all types of tangible and intangible assets belonging to the American-Zionist enemy."

Rubio, Araghchi, and mediators

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump had not made a decision about fresh strikes on Iran and that the U.S. would be open to a diplomatic solution.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there were currently no plans for meetings with U.S. officials and that "consultations regarding them are ongoing among mediators," according to the state news agency IRNA.

Mohsen Rezaei told Iranian television that "I read the letter" from U.S. Vice President JD Vance and said, "Their tone has completely changed," describing it as "a good sign."

The CBS News live updates also said Rubio told the public that "no decision has been made yet" on whether to restart military action, while Trump said the U.S. had "the ability to do it" if needed.

The Times of Israel said Trump told reporters in Palm Beach that the U.S. wanted to destroy up to two more targets in Iran and pointed again to "Pickaxe Mountain."

Murphy calls the plan insane

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy said he had been briefed on a Trump administration plan for a possible resumption of military operations against Iran and warned it could escalate and prolong the war.

Murphy told a Middle East Institute event in Washington, "their plan is insane," and said it would lead to "devastating escalation" and "the likely destruction of our commitment to the rule of law."

A White House official speaking on background said the administration would not comment on "sensitive military plans that may or may not exist" while President Donald Trump kept all options open to ensure Iran could never obtain a nuclear weapon.

NewsNation said Admiral Brad Cooper briefed Trump on potential options and plans should the president decide to proceed with reengaging major combat operations against Iran, and it cited U.S. Central Command saying the naval blockade had succeeded.

NewsNation also reported that the United States warned Middle East allies to prepare for possible renewed military action after next week’s midterm elections and for potential Iranian retaliation against energy facilities and other critical infrastructure.
