Pandas Debut in Atlanta
Zoo Atlanta introduced giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang to the public Friday at the zoo's new Arthur M. Blank Panda Grove, where visitors lined up to welcome them.
“Giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang made their public debut at Zoo Atlanta's new Arthur M. Blank Panda Grove on Friday.”
Zoo Atlanta President and CEO Raymond B. King said in a statement, "Zoo Atlanta is thrilled to be able to introduce Ping Ping and Fu Shuang to our Members and guests," as the 6-year-old duo munched bamboo and lounged during the debut.
ABC News reported that the zoo gave "Good Morning America" a first look at a video of the 6-year-old pandas in their new habitat ahead of Friday morning's opening ceremony.
Zoo Atlanta said Ping Ping is a male and was born on March 17, 2020, while Fu Shuang is a female who just turned 6 on Oct. 18, and both arrived in Atlanta in September from China under a 10-year loan agreement.
Quarantine, Habitat, and Visitors
Zoo Atlanta said the pair completed a routine quarantine period in a "biosecure area" of the panda grove before their public debut. Gina Ferrie, Zoo Atlanta's vice president of collections and conservation, said, "It took them a little while to get used to the new environment, new people, new animal care staff," as the upgraded habitat included larger indoor areas and expanded outdoor spaces.
Visitors described the moment as a personal highlight, with Paris Gentry saying, "It's a really cool experience that we got to see that, like, out of nowhere," after traveling from Ohio to Atlanta. Zoo Atlanta planned to continue welcome festivities throughout opening weekend with family-friendly arts, crafts, and face painting across the grounds, and the zoo said the pandas would remain in the U.S. temporarily as part of a giant panda conservation agreement between Zoo Atlanta and the China Wildlife Conservation Association.
Diplomacy and the Next Chapter
Xie Feng, the Chinese ambassador to the U.S., attended the debut celebration and said the pandas' arrival "marks the renewal of a decade-long bond between China and Zoo Atlanta."
Georgia Public Broadcasting quoted Ambassador Feng saying, "Ping Ping is here to take up the baton from his uncle Yang Yang, his mother's elder brother," as the debut tied the new loan to Zoo Atlanta's earlier panda residents.
La Nación reported that the enclosure had been empty since 2024 after four other pandas returned from the United States to China, ending a 25-year partnership amid strained relations between the two countries.
The Georgia Public Broadcasting report said Zoo Atlanta unveiled the Arthur M. Blank Panda Grove, which includes $6 million of expanded habitat and new climbing structures, and it added that the pandas can also be seen online through the Zoo Atlanta Panda Cam.
