Yesha Council leader urges Argentina’s Milei to at Casa Rosada meeting

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.4 findings

Binyamin Regional Council head and Yesha Council chairman Israel Ganz met this week with Argentine President Javier Milei at the Casa Rosada, the seat of Argentina's government. The meeting was part of a diplomatic tour of South America that Ganz is conducting to forge new partnerships abroad, , and enlist partners in the fight against boycotts and .In June, the UK, alongside Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand and Norway, announced coordinated sanctions against , with Britain targeting six entities and one individual.During their conversation, Ganz linked the issue of the Malvinas Islands, the Argentine name for what the British call the Falkland Islands, to sanctions on settlements in the West Bank.

Argentina claims sovereignty over the British-controlled islands and has long demanded their return.“Britain must be cut down to size. The days of the White Paper and British imperialism are over,” Ganz said, in reference to the 1939 British White Paper that restricted Jewish immigration to Mandatory Palestine. “It cannot be that European countries continue to lord it over other countries, trying to dictate their future and control their sovereign territory, in Israel, in Argentina and elsewhere.“Britain must end the occupation of the Malvinas Islands and also cancel the shameful sanctions on Judea and Samaria,” he continued, .

The meeting was arranged by Rabbi Richard Kaufman, a personal friend of the president. It lasted an hour, and Ganz's associates described it as very warm and productive. It was the pair's third meeting, following encounters at various conferences, and the first held in this format at the Casa Rosada. The two agreed to significantly strengthen their ties, and Ganz invited Milei on a state visit to Binyamin and the West Bank.'A historic meeting'Speaking outside the Casa Rosada after the meeting, Ganz said: “I am coming out of a historic meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei, a true friend of the State of Israel and a dear friend.

I thank him for the warm welcome and for his courageous stand alongside Israel and the Jewish people. I came to him with a clear request: to recognize Judea and Samaria as part of the Land of Israel and to stand against the boycott and sanctions on the settlements.“From here, I call on the countries of the world: , the cradle of our forefathers and the future of our state,” he added.

“The Jewish people are not foreigners in Binyamin, Judea and Samaria. This is our homeland, and no sanction will erase this bond. Against the boycott we will open markets, against the sanctions we will recruit partners, and we will continue to build and grow.”

What we found (4)

The Jerusalem Post reports a settler leader's campaign against sanctions on settlements and never tells its reader that the ICJ found the settlements illegal and the occupation unlawful. It gives Ganz the whole article and quotes no Palestinian, though settler violence is what the sanctions target. Its headline and its own description blur sanctions on settler-violence networks into the West Bank as a whole.

  1. Hedges the documented record

    Serious

    “sanctions targeting the settlements”

    Why this matters
The Post writes 'sanctions targeting the settlements' in its own voice and never says what the settlements are in law.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away thinking the sanctions hit lawful communities, and that the dispute is a political quarrel between Israel and foreign governments.
    The context
The ICJ's July 2024 advisory opinion found the settlements in the West Bank illegal under international law. That legal status is the background to the sanctions this article turns on. The article never mentions it.

    • Checked against the whole articleIt never uses the words “illegal”.

“using the biblical name for the West Bank”

    Why this matters
The Post explains that 'Judea and Samaria' is a biblical name. It then calls the territory simply 'the West Bank' and nowhere says it is occupied.
    The impression it gives
A reader learns the name Ganz uses but not the territory's legal status, so 'the West Bank' reads as neutral ground.
    The context
The ICJ found Israel's occupation of the West Bank unlawful. The article explains the name but leaves out the ruling.

    Written straight

The meeting was part of a tour in which Ganz is seeking support against sanctions on settlements, which the International Court of Justice ruled illegal under international law in 2024, in the occupied West Bank.

  2. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

    “oppose West Bank sanctions”

    Why this matters
The headline calls the measures 'West Bank sanctions', as if they targeted the territory as a whole.
    The impression it gives
A reader thinks foreign governments have sanctioned the West Bank, or the people who live there.
    The context
The body says the sanctions target settlements and networks accused of financing and carrying out settler violence. They are not sanctions on the West Bank.

  3. One side gets the space

    Minor

“Recognize the right of the State of Israel to Judea and Samaria”

    Why this matters
The Post quotes Ganz at length on Israel's claimed right to the land. It quotes no Palestinian and gives no response from Britain or the other sanctioning states.
    The impression it gives
A reader hears only the settler council's case about land where millions of Palestinians live.
    The context
The article never uses the word Palestinian. The people who live on the land Ganz claims, and the governments he attacks, get no voice.

    How we know

    • On the recordReporting on Israel's assault on Gaza and on the Greens' Zionism motion has given Israeli, pro-Israel and Israeli-government sources far more space than Palestinian voices, who are quoted least when the story concerns them.newscord.org (opens in a new tab)

“networks accused of financing and carrying out settler violence”

    Why this matters
The Post names settler violence but never says who it is done to.
    The impression it gives
A reader is left with violence that has no victims.
    The context
The article never names Palestinians as the people settler violence targets.

  4. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

“broaden support for the West Bank”

    Why this matters
In its own voice the Post describes Ganz's campaign for the settlements as building support 'for the West Bank'.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the settler council's cause and the West Bank as one and the same.
    The context
Ganz chairs a council of settlements. His tour seeks backing for settlements the ICJ found illegal, not for the West Bank or its Palestinian population.
