Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran is prepared for war to resume, “even if it comes to a doomsday war,” while insisting Tehran remains open to diplomacy.
Araghchi told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that “We are ready for diplomacy. We are ready for war at the same time,” as he outlined a seven-day proposal under which Tehran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Araghchi said Iran would reopen the strait if Washington first took steps Iran has sought, including ending the war, releasing frozen Iranian assets, removing the blockade and allowing Iran to sell its oil.
Araghchi said he believed the United States could take the required steps within four or five days, with Iran reopening the strait on day six and resuming negotiations on day seven.
Araghchi said he was “still waiting for an official response through the mediators” after U.S. President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s proposal.
Trump Rejected, Iran Waits
U.S. President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and Araghchi said Iran was still awaiting an official response through mediators.
Araghchi told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that “Our proposal is very clear. We are ready to open the strait if certain things are done by the US,” and he said the sequence would place reopening on day six and final negotiations on day seven.
Araghchi accused the Trump administration of undermining diplomacy, saying Washington attacked Iran during talks in both 2025 and 2026 and violated a subsequent agreement shortly after it was signed.
Araghchi said he did not trust Trump, replying, “We trust ourselves,” when asked whether he trusted the U.S. president.
Araghchi also said he was leaving diplomacy on the table so as not to “miss any chance for peace,” while still warning that Iran is “fully prepared” to respond to renewed attacks.
War Readiness and Nuclear Stakes
Araghchi said Iran is “fully prepared” for renewed military confrontation with the United States, and he described the possibility of a “doomsday war” while maintaining that Tehran remains willing to pursue a diplomatic agreement. Araghchi said Iran had learned from earlier fighting and changed its military tactics, telling NBC’s “Meet the Press,” “We have learned our lesson from the two previous wars, and we have corrected our tactics.” Araghchi argued that Iran’s enrichment was for “peaceful” purposes, including medical uses, and he said Iran had offered to negotiate over its 60%-enriched material.

Araghchi said the issue of Iran’s nuclear program should be settled through negotiations rather than military action, and he explained that Iran decided to put everything nuclear for the later stages and go for confidence building in this stage. Araghchi said the decision between renewed military action and negotiations was up to Trump, while Iran said it was ready for diplomacy and ready for war at the same time.
