Phuket flag dispute
A dispute over a “Free Palestine” flag erupted in Phuket when a shop owner and two Israeli tourists argued inside a mobile phone shop in Bang Thao, tambon Cherng Talay in Thalang district, after the tourists asked for the flag to be taken down. The Bangkok Post said the CCTV video was shared by Facebook user “ดะห์ลัน กิจจารักษ์” on Aug 24 and showed the conversation developing into a heated argument before the pair left the shop.B
The shop owner, who gave his name as Dahlan, said the flag had been on display for about a year and that he wanted to express opposition to the loss of life and destruction in Gaza as a matter of conscience. In the same incident, Al Jazeera said the Thai vendor confronted Israeli tourists outside his shop on Phuket, waving a Palestinian flag and chanting ‘Free Palestine’ before asking them to leave.

The Bangkok Post reported that the shop owner Dahlan said he held a personal position on the Palestinian issue and described it as a stance he takes as a matter of conscience, adding that he claimed he did not initiate the confrontation. BDahlan told the Bangkok Post that the two customers had come in looking for a phone accessory that was out of stock, and that both sides subsequently made remarks during the exchange that were disputed.
Al Jazeera described the confrontation as provoked by one of the group, saying the tourists had been shouting ‘Free Israel’ while the vendor chanted ‘Free Palestine’. In the Bangkok Post account, Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said on Monday that Thailand does not welcome foreigners using it to air ideological views that could trigger wider unrest, and he added that troublemakers could have their visas revoked.B
Tourism tensions
The Bangkok Post linked the Phuket exchange to a wider pattern of incidents involving Israelis, including a zoo on Koh Samui refusing entry to an Israeli family after learning their nationality and a 62-year-old Israeli woman and her 23-year-old daughter being seriously beaten on Koh Phangan. It said the Israeli man who alleged assault by a French husband was subsequently fined 5,000 baht, while the Koh Phangan attack led to surgery for both women and the assailant being reportedly released on 100,000-baht bail after being arrested in connection with another unrelated incident.
Al Jazeera framed the Phuket confrontation as a disruption to tourism, saying the vendor asked the tourists to leave after waving a Palestinian flag and chanting ‘Free Palestine’. Khaosod English added a separate Phuket account from Patong in Kathu district, saying a 24-year-old tour counter worker identified as Kechin told an Israeli tourist, “This is Thailand, not your country,” before asking him to leave.
