Timeline After Midterms
President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the Iran war will end “immediately after the election,” while also telling reporters that gas prices are unlikely to fall before the U.S. midterm elections.
““I think it’s going to take a little bit longer than the midterm,” Trump said of gas prices coming down.”
Trump made the prediction while en route to the GOP midterm convention in Dallas, and he said “I think it’s going to take a little bit longer than the midterm” for gas prices to come down.
The CNBC report tied the elevated energy prices to the Iran war and said global benchmark Brent crude futures traded above $101 per barrel for the first time since July, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures surpassed $96 per barrel at session highs.
CNN reported that Trump said Iran would continue the war into November to damage him politically, and that he expects Iran to seek an end to the conflict “immediately after the election.”
Strikes, Hormuz, and Prices
The Hill reported that Trump said the U.S. war with Iran will end “immediately” after November’s midterm elections, and it quoted him saying “They’re desperate to try and affect the election so that we can get a nice, weak group of people in there.”
The Hill also said Iran targeted 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, including two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers, after the U.S. destroyed five Iranian oil tankers Tuesday.
CNN said the surge in oil prices was driven by stepped-up fighting in Iran in recent days that jeopardized crude flow through the Strait of Hormuz, and it reported gas prices jumped 7.3 cents per gallon on Wednesday.
CNN added that the average gas price nationwide is now $4.22 per gallon and that diesel prices hit a record $5.94 per gallon Wednesday, as Trump insisted “I think it’s very easy to explain to America” why prices are high.
Nuclear Pressure and Uncertainty
Beyond the midterm timeline, the BBC reported that Trump said further negotiations with Iran could possibly happen, “but it’s not something we’re looking at,” while also saying “Right after the election, oil prices are going to be tumbling downward.”

The BBC said the U.S. military attacked five oil tanker ships with ties to Iran, and it reported that Tehran launched attacks on two U.S. Navy destroyers and eight oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, causing “heavy damage” to the vessels.
NDTV reported that the International Atomic Energy Agency board of governors voted to refer Iran to the UN Security Council over its nuclear “non-compliance,” describing the resolution as adopted by a 23-3 vote with eight abstentions.
NDTV also quoted Iran’s representative to the nuclear watchdog saying the resolution “has no basis and will not bring any results,” as the same report said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Iran was about to collapse.
