AI incident channel
The United States and China agreed to establish a “communication channel” for artificial intelligence incidents after President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded a summit in Washington, DC. The White House said the two countries also set up a “U.S.-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue” to exchange views on risks and benefits, with the next exchange set to occur by November. Xi told the White House that “We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control,” as the leaders discussed AI alongside trade.
The White House said the leaders agreed to use the term SI rather than AI, and the next exchange was set for November. The agreement came as the White House said the nations agreed to establish a “bilateral communication channel” for AI incidents, while there was no immediate comment from Beijing on the White House statement.
Tariffs and trade truce
The United States and China agreed to a $30 billion reciprocal tariff-reduction arrangement, and the White House said the AI incident channel was part of the same set of understandings. The White House said the two sides agreed to extend a trade truce due to expire in November, pushing the deadline to January, to give both sides the chance to talk. The tariff reductions applied to US exports such as agricultural goods, wood and cosmetics, as well as US imports including small appliances, toys, decorations.
The two sides agreed to set up a trade council and extend the outcomes of earlier talks in Kuala Lumpur, while the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the trade truce extension added more time to work on a potentially bigger trade deal. The White House said the next AI-specific exchange would take place by November, and the leaders confirmed they would meet for a third and fourth time this year at international summits in China and the US. The final part of the U.S.-China agreement was to strengthen military crisis communications, and the two countries planned to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at preventing confrontations between their armed forces. The leaders agreed that Iran should fulfil its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, and that no country or entity should impose transit tolls on international waterways.
Xi called for the US and China to manage their superpower rivalry and keep AI under human control, while the White House said the summit focused on the rising challenges posed by AI.
